Job Summary


The NAV CANADA Pension Plan (NCPP) is a defined benefit pension plan with approximately 9000 members and approximately $6 billion in assets invested across the spectrum of asset classes.

Approximately 16% of the NCPP's assets are invested in Absolute Return Strategies and Credit Strategies (both public and private).

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Manager, Pension Investments to join our small group of highly engaged and innovative investment professionals responsible for investing the Plan assets.


The Manager, Pension Investments will report to the Assistant Vice President, Pension Investments and primarily be responsible for the Absolute Return and Credit Strategies portfolios.

This key role offers the opportunity to get involved in a wide variety of initiatives including oversight of two portfolios, periodic review of asset mix policy, and portfolio construction across all asset classes.


Job Description:


In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for monitoring and management of the Absolute Return Strategies and Credit portfolios including conducting research to support investment strategy development and due diligence activities to support recommendations for new strategies as required.
  • Represent NAV CANADA's interests on private investment Advisory Committees.
  • Support the Plan's approach to investment risk management and reporting, including risk analysis activities and tools and the production of periodic reporting for all material investment risk exposures in the absolute return and credit portfolios.
  • Be a contributing member of NAV CANADA's Investment Committee reviewing investment recommendations across all asset classes.
  • Actively participate in the periodic review of asset mix policy, investment strategy and portfolio construction across asset classes.
  • Actively participate in the development of short and longterm strategic plans.

What we are looking for:

  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in the investment management field, preferably in the pension/institutional investment context with expertise in private asset classes and hedge funds.
  • Bachelor and/or Masters' degree in Business, Mathematics, Economics or a related field of study.
  • Completion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program and/or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation.

You have:

  • Experience in selecting and monitoring external investment managers using a disciplined framework.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, implementing, and monitoring investment processes policies.
  • Excellent decisionmaking ability. Ability to critically assess options and clearly recommend alternatives with balanced arguments.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problemsolving capabilities, with the ability to assess investment and risk management strategies.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of the investment industry and sound understanding of the economic environment and financial markets/capital market dynamics.
  • Working knowledge of governance, risk management, regulation, actuarial, accounting, custodial and internal control frameworks typical of a corporate pension plan.

Working conditions

  • The Pension Investment team is working in a 'hybrid' model, with some remote work as well as collaborating in person at head office approximately 3 days per week. Alternate work arrangements will be considered under NAV CANADA's Flexible Work Policy.
  • Some travel may be required.
