We are currently looking for an

Energy Marketer to join our Energy and Risk Management team in a permanent position. This role will report into the Team Lead, Energy Dispatch and Marketing and works in a 24/7 shift environment.

As Energy Marketer you will:
  • Optimize Nova Scotia Power's generation assets and transmission portfolio in the real
  • time physical energy market.
  • Continually monitor power markets to maintain knowledge of price, availability and demand for electric energy within the interconnected electric systems to ensure energy scheduling and marketing activities are optimized and result in the lowest possible fuel and purchased power costs for NS Power's customers.
  • Forecast and analyze realtime power demand in Nova Scotia and communicating fuel management requirements to internal stakeholders in a timely fashion.
  • Analyze and incorporate current market conditions into realtime planning and communicating pertinent information to NS Power's Energy Scheduling and Dispatch team.
  • Provide economic solutions for generation facility derates and shortterm generation unit outages with generating plant and Energy Control Centre personnel while ensuring optimal economic scheduling and dispatch of generation.
  • Manage relationships and maintain regular communication with personnel at NS Power's generating facilities, Energy Control Centre, and Load Retention Tariff customers to optimize the economic dispatch of NS Power's assets.
  • Schedule and dispatching of generation within environmental requirements while maintaining the ability to react to system contingencies and/or marketing opportunities.
  • Work in a fastpaced environment that involves multitasking, making timely decisions, and ensuring compliance with all scheduling and customer requirements.
  • Provide coverage to the Day-Ahead Marketing desk as required.
  • Accurate logging of all relevant information captured during shifts.

What skills will make you successful?
You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • Degree in a related field (engineering, science, business or economics, diploma / certification in a related field such as Electrical / Electronic Technology or Power Engineering, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years' experience in a utility or related industry which could include some combination of power desk experience, natural gas desk experience, operations experience in generating stations, field experience with bulk transmission systems and / or power system operations experience.
  • One to three years' experience in negotiating price and other terms and conditions of power purchase and sales agreements, with proven capabilities in managing market risk.
  • Ability to understand and interpret market rules and transmission tariffs.
  • Exceptional communication skills and desire to achieve strong results.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving industry standards and have strong analytical and modelling skills.
  • Ability to remain focused under pressure, prioritize tasks and multitask.
  • Ability to manage timelines and deadlines to meet internal and customer timelines.
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to make decisions independently.
  • Computer skills an asset (Excel, programming in VBA, VB, C#, SQL, etc.).
  • Completion or a willingness to complete the Canadian Securities Course (CSC).
