1 ‐ Casual ‐ Nurse Practitioner (Patient Navigator)

Regional Surgical Services
Reporting to the Director of the Regional Surgical Services Program in collaboration with the Director of Surgical and

Ambulatory Care services, with a matrix reporting relationship to the Chief Nursing Executive, and accountability to

the Chief of Surgery and the Medical Director of Musculoskeletal Health, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides care

within the scope of practice of an RN (EC) and as outlined in the NP collaborative practice agreement, any care that

is outside of the NP legislated scope of practice will be authorized through the use of medical directives and direct

orders. Orthopaedic Surgeons and Anesthesiologist(s) will collaborate with the NP routinely and provide direction

related to development, implementation and amendment of patient care plans. NP practice addresses the five

domains of Advanced Practice Nursing:
Clinical Practice, Collaboration, Research, Leadership, and Change Agent.

The percentage of time dedicated to each of these domains is variable, based on the program needs and will evolve

with the program.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) works within the framework of nursing as member of the inter professional healthcare

team. The NP role will focus primarily on clinical practice requiring advanced clinical assessment, clinical reasoning,

pharmacology, and communication skills to formulate an optimal clinical management plan. The NP Coordinates the

patient's care to increase the efficiency and quality of care that is delivered to the patient. The Nurse Practitioner

(NP) will support and navigate the patient's surgical journey. The NP will be the patient advocate and provide care in

a highly supportive and personal manner, and serve as a liaison to ensure that patients and families

receive resources and services as needed.


EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Unencumbered registration as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (EC) with the College of Nurses of
Ontario Adult specialty certificate

  • Membership in NPAO or RNAO required
  • Successful completion of Graduate Studies
  • Minimum 3 years recent nurse practitioner experience in an acute care setting during past 5 year period.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of the Patient and Family Centred Care model
  • Clinical knowledge and expertise in surgical care
  • Previous adult education and program development, implementation and evaluation experience
  • Strong leadership ability and highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage and work collaboratively within an inter professional team
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing situations
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Effective facilitation skills: individual and group
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • High level of initiative and self direction
  • Knowledge of local and regional issues related to acute and chronic pain and rehabilitation
  • Ability to plan, manage and implement change effectively
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education

Salary Range:
$63.310 to 68.680
