As an Equipment Operator II in Forestry, your main role will be to operate a front end loader and potentially operate a skid steer, tractors, 5 ton truck, brush truck, forestry chipper on a daily basis, among other tasks.

Equipment must be operated with expertise and safety.

You will utilize your ability to work independently using strong organization skills to meet the needs of Forestry Operations in Parks and Roads Services.


Duties will include:

  • Maintain daily maintenance on equipment
  • Maintain daily record keeping
  • Loading and unloading of balled and burlap trees from trailer
  • Drive a front end loader on highways and City streets and in park spaces
  • Operating a front end loader on City streets and parks as part of the City's tree planting program
  • Support various tree planting tasks including shoveling soil, installing and removing stakes and rodent protection and installation of trees
  • Responsible for load securement
  • May also be responsible for Loading, tarping and operation of truck dump box, dumping of material from dump truck box on various ground surfaces
  • Working with tree crews and contractors onsite
  • Delivering and hauling material to and from job sites following NSC and municipal legislation for load securement
  • Loading and unloading trucks with material, including lifting and using rigging attached to the loader
  • Ability to follow and understand truck routes
  • Various tree maintenance related activities; including but not limited to stump grinding, chipping of brush, operation of equipment (tractors, loaders, skid steers)
  • Snow removal
  • Performing other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completion of the 10th school grade supplemented by 1 year experience in the operation of equipment assigned to the position or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 3 Vehicle Operator's License with Air Brake Endorsement (or provincial equivalent) is a requirement of this position
  • Obtain and maintain a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Standard First Aid, WHMIS Training, Chainsaw and ground disturbance Training would be assets
  • Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform the work of this position
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and have experience using a forestry chipper
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and rules of the safe operation of the assigned equipment and occupational hazards applicable to the work. Must have the required competency to perform work safely. May be tested to ensure skill level is acceptable
  • Tree maintenance experience and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification are considered assets
  • Previous experience or training in load rigging and crane use is considered an asset
  • Good knowledge of the methods and practices used in servicing and maintaining the equipment
  • Ability to respond to inquiries/complaints in a manner that is polite and sensitive to the needs of the public
  • Ability to complete time cards, daily work records and interpret work assignments
  • Willingness to work in all weather conditions
