The Team Leader will report to and support the Manager of
ICU in the coordination and daily operation of the Unit.

Clinical knowledge and leadership skills are used to promote and maintain quality patient-focused care.

The Team Leader is responsible and accountable for organizing and ensuring patient care services are delivered with high-quality, safety, and consistency on a daily basis, as well as supporting timely patient flow.


This is achieved through continuous monitoring to promote and maintain quality, patient-centered, timely, and efficient care to maximize patient outcomes.

The Team Leader supports team members to coordinate and integrate services using the resources of a Multi-Disciplinary team and maintains a good rapport with this team to facilitate efficient patient flow and care excellence.


The Team Leader promotes the Georgian Bay General Hospital's Mission, Vision and Value and is a role model for team work, leadership and professionalism on the unit, which supports sustainability through the organization as a whole.


Job Requirements:

Education Required:


  • Registered Nurse with current registration with College of Nurses
  • Current certification in required skills
  • BCLS


  • Coronary Care

  • Level 1 and 2

Education Preferred:


  • Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing
  • Evidence of ongoing education (e.g. workshops, seminars, etc.)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (A.C.L.S.)
  • Critical Care Certificate

Key Accountabilities:


  • Work with leadership team to ensure all hospital resources are aligned to support the successful achievement of patient care access and delivery.
  • Identify and evaluate problems and lead interventions.
  • Collaborate and participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Managing patient flow (ex: Surge Capacity, bottlenecks, constraints, bed utilization) and collaborating with the manager to determine staffing requirements, staffing allocation and staffing reassignments based on needs of the department and patient care needs and communicate these requirements in order to ensure needs are met.
  • Responsible for inputting Unit Specific Indicators/Tracking Information.
  • Evaluate and maximize use of Process Plans, Discharge Care Plans and Transfer Tools along with assigned nurse to meet the needs of individual patients and minimize their length of hospitalization.
  • Organize family meetings along with assigned nurse thereby establish therapeutic and respectful relationships with patients and their families in order to develop an appropriate care plan with established common goals and objectives.
  • Act as a liaison to leadership team and facilitate communication among the intraprofessional care team, other departments, physicians and all other disciplines and partnerships with other organizations.
  • Provide guidance, support and instruction to staff members as well as facilitate and lead communication meetings for transfer of information in order to discuss ongoing concerns.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating educational opportunities for professional development of staff.
  • Maintain current knowledge through regular attendance to courses and seminars/ dedication to lifelong learning.
  • Address interpersonal and interdisciplinary conflicts among staff using conflict resolution skills as appropriate and promote collegiality.
  • Facilitate mentoring through new graduate program, orientate new staff and relay information to current staff regarding new policies, procedures and equipment.
  • Participate in Unit meetings/special projects and Unit committees.
  • Lead huddles, rapid rounds.

Key Skills and Abilities Required

  • 25 years current, clinicalrelated /leadership experience and appropriate courses.
  • Recent experience applicable to the unit.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development and life long learning.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, communication skills necessary to promote positive interdisciplinary team dynamics.
  • Demonstrated team approach and professional attitude with internal and external team members, including a good working knowledge of community resources.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service behaviours and commitment to patientfocussed care.
  • Demonstrated ability for multitasking, critical thinking, effective problemsolving and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated initiative to participate in hospital activities.
  • Demonstrated reliability, dependability and adaptability.
  • Good work and attendance record required.
