ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
This role reports to the Applied Genomics Centre Director.


SUMMARY


The Student Research Assistant has a supportive role for research goals of the Applied Genomics Centre (AGC) under an NSERC IE Build Program.

This is an educational role with the intent of providing learning opportunities and practical training to the individual while they are enrolled as a student at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

This individual will support applied research projects under the supervision and direction of the Director, Laboratory and Research Coordinator, Research Associates, and Research Technicians.

They will perform general laboratory tasks, assist in generating experimental data, and communicate results to the Director, Coordinator, Associates, and industry partners.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate in training and practice of laboratory and research skills:

  • Engage in hands-on training in proper laboratory techniques under the supervision of the Laboratory and Research Coordinator, Research Associates, and Research Technicians.
Provide research support for the AGC's Director, Faculty project leads, Laboratory and Research Coordinator, and Research Associates:

  • Assist in gathering experimental data in the AGC lab and in the field when required.
  • Execute experiments required for research projects (following hands on training).
  • Contribute data and, where appropriate, assist in preparing graphs, charts, reports, and presentations, collaboratively and under the direction of the AGC's senior leadership.
  • Perform general lab tasks such as cleaning and organizing lab equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in an appropriate academic program at KPU.
  • Successful completion of some foundational courses in applicable Biology topics (may include Genetics, Microbiology, Botany, Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, chemistry, horticulture, environmental protection or others).
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new skills and follow proper lab protocols.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written English language skills.
  • Detail oriented, with excellent organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work alone or in groups.
  • General research and other skills
  • Ability to use office technologies effectively and to adapt to new technologies that may be introduced.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of cultural environments; and readiness to adopt the working culture (timekeeping, time management, collegiality, mutual respect, etc.) of the Applied Genomics Centre.

Salary Information

Anticipated hourly pay rate:
$18.79
