Friends of Ruby (FoR) is dedicated to the journey and well-being of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, aged 16-29 through mental health services, social services, and housing. FoR offers Youth Mental Health services, a Youth Drop-In Centre, and a Transitional Home. The Centre provides access to barrier-free counselling and therapeutic groups, case management and a drop-in space with hot meals, community, and comprehensive programming. The Home provides transitional and emergency housing, as well as mental health and life-skills to support youth moving towards independent living.

Position Summary


Under the direction of the Youth Services & Housing Director, the Housing Manager will supervise staff and services at the House.


This role will provide day-to-day supervision, mentoring and performance management to housing staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, customer service excellence, and continuous learning, while encouraging innovation, evaluating performance and leading staff development through motivation and training, while creating a safe and supportive environment for all residents and staff in the House.


The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervision of Staff_
  • Schedule staff, ensuring an even distribution of hours between staff in accordance with their full/part time or relief status and considering the level of training required for each position; avoiding gaps and finding last minute coverage when needed, including statutory holidays, sick days and overtime requirements;
  • Tracking availability, managing employee's time off and attendance; entering staff payroll data and submitting hours worked to Finance Department;
  • Daytoday supervision of assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, customer service excellence, and continuous learning;
  • Performance management, professional development, evaluation and mentoring of assigned staff; corrective coaching and/or disciplinary actions in accordance with the Organization's policies and procedures;
  • Supervise, coach and mentor employees, establish clear goal setting with employees and outline expected outcomes and time frames; Assign tasks, responsibilities, clear deliverables, timelines and ensure employee's take accountability for their work;
  • Foster a positive, healthy and safe work environment;
  • Oversee and assume responsibility for the direct & indirect deliverables of housing staff, providing regular support and check ins;
  • Support the Director in the facilitation of regular staff meetings on organizational updates and programspecific matters and coordinates staff participation in meetings;
  • Support the Director with recruitment, orientation and training of staff; and in determining appropriate staffing requirements for housing services;
  • Case Management_
  • Manage housing intakes, service planning and discharge plans for all participants;
  • Manage, monitor and update housing plans for every participant, supporting each of them moving from transitional housing in a suitable community setting;
  • Ensure effective case management oversight as a part of the housing intake process.
  • Oversee the engagement of youth within the housing program to ensure and effective level of life skills development is included the day to day activities of the house.
  • Work collaboratively with case workers by establishing shortterm and longterm intervention goals for each youth using strengths based, client centered, youth development approach;
  • Build partnerships among residents, professionals, caregivers and families;
  • Research and connect youth to housing resources and supports which recognize and can address the unique needs of LGBTQI2S youth, including access resources in the community to support their tenancy and promote healthy lifestyles connected with the community;
  • Lead and participate in consultation services and case conferences with service providers to discuss care plans and service needs;
  • Planning, Engagement & Sustainment_
  • Ensure processes are in place for the team to do intake assessments for housing & shelter, screening youth to assess fit to our services and support their transition to sustainable housing;
  • Ensure staff are following organizational policies and operating procedures that are also consistent with any legislation and/or City Standards
