Reporting to the Supervisor, Tree Planting and Tree Nursery, the Forestry Data Collector is a key member of the Urban Forest Renewal team, contributing to the planning, implementation and inspection of various planting programs aimed at increasing the urban forest canopy across the City of Toronto.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conducts site visits in various settings to take photos and measurements, collect data related to tree planting such as species, location and site conditions and monitor planting survival, tree health and insect/disease problems.
- Identifies potential tree planting sites on street rightsofway, open spaces, parks.
- Performs surveys for specific signs and symptoms of pests and diseases on trees located on public and private lands.
- Performs minor pruning of branches of trees as required, working from the ground.
- Participates in the implementation of pest management programs, completing repetitive manual tasks such as setting up and monitoring insect traps, performing branch dissections, controlling insect populations by removal, vacuuming, spot spraying or treating egg masses.
- Uses computers and other field and data collection devices and software to input and tabulate data, map tree locations, and develop planting plans.
- Reads and interprets sketches, maps, and plans showing tree and property data.
- Answers or refers inquiries from the public relating to the work program (e.g., tree planting and species selection, tree related bylaws), communicating documented information when required.
- Performs tasks (independently in all weather conditions) such as updating tree inventory, preparation of planting plans, delivery of notices, mapping, and inventory of trees, assessing tree health, etc
Key Qualifications:
- Postsecondary education in Ecology, Forestry, Environmental Science or related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in tree planting with regards to tree species, site selection, planting requirements and maintenance.
- Experience in the identification and treatment of common biotic and abiotic tree stresses in the urban environment.
- Must possess a valid Province of Ontario Class "G" Driver's License and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements and be able to maintain same.
You must also have:
- Ability to implement work plans in a timely manner and maintain simple records of work.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of tree morphology, physiology, and dendrology.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and drawings.
- Must be physically capable of performing required duties.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
