    Job Summary
    Reporting to the Division Manager of the Emergency and Ambulatory Care Division of the Children's and Women's Health Program, the incumbent will provide assessment and treat anomalies of ocular motilities, in particular strabismus and amblyopia conditions under the direction of an Ophthalmologist. The incumbent will administer appropriate ophthalmic/orthoptic tests including visual acuity, ocular motility, optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and binocular vision assessments and complete such reports in a timely manner. He/she will also provide visual screening procedures in ophthalmology clinics, potentially including out-reach clinic services outside of St. John's. The Orthoptist will discuss issues relating to patient care, surgeries and ophthalmology follow-ups with referring ophthalmologists, in addition to instructing medical students or interns on the techniques of Orthoptic assessments.

    Occasionally lifting of times 10-25lbs.
    Regularly sitting, standing and moving around several times during examinations.
    Constantly uses fine finger/precision work and operating hand tools and equipment for measuring and assessment requiring control and steadiness, eye/hand coordination and awkward body positioning.
    Higher than normal levels of attentiveness or alertness is required for health and safety of patients when instilling eye drops in uncooperative or upset children and wen examining eyes closely with sensitive equipment so as not to accidently poke or scratch eyes.
    May be subject to time pressures/deadlines and interruptions as clinics are often overbooked and many patients are waiting for extended periods.

    Job Qualifications
    Bachelor of Science Degree with graduation from a recognized orthoptic training program.
    A minimum of 3-5 years orthoptic experience in an ophthalmic setting.
    Current certification by the Canadian or American Orthoptic Council is required.
    Excellent communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities are essential.
    Must be committed to continuous learning and family centered care.
    A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
