Position purpose:


Using both traditional and digital communication tools, the Advancement Writer and Analyst crafts proposals in support of key stakeholder engagement and solicitations for fundraising efforts of the Faculty of Medicine to engage donors (alumni, community members and corporate).

Communication pieces will also be developed to support Alumni Relations and fundraising stewardship and solicitation.

They also support operations related to fundraising activities through pipeline management, donor research and identification as well as, participating in planning for advanced cultivation and solicitation.


In this role you will:

  • Communications: Writes and delivers timely promotional materials, proposals, web, social media and press releases, in appropriate language and style, for FoM alumni, donors, the Manager, Marketing and Communications and senior administration, including the Dean and Vice Deans to cultivate, persuade, and prompt alumni and donors to get involved in order to meet the fundraising goals of the Faculty of Medicine. Develops, drafts, revises and edits promotional and philanthropy materials a to ensure accuracy and consistency of messages to various internal and external stakeholders. Perform needs and cost/benefit analyses of proposed communications plans to support the annual budget planning and ensure that related activities comply with budget limits. Develops and establishes standard formats, text and templates for promotional materials, proposals, and letters of intent and cultivation materials.
  • Engagement: Develop and design fundraising and engagement materials, with graphic designers and photography and printing resources in its production to promote the Faculty's activities to donors, alumni and community members. Perform needs and cost/benefit analyses of proposed marketing plans to support the annual budget planning of the sector and ensure that related activities comply with budget limits. Implements clear communication strategies as set out in the overall strategic fundraising plan for the faculty, by coordinating activities, cultivating and nurturing relationships with key alumni/donors in order to secure funding to reach the Faculty's goals.
  • Trends and needs analysis: Initiate and execute market research studies and analyze results to identify potential new markets and program/service offerings. Analyze and evaluate communications and advertising needs and propose solutions contributing to annual strategic plan of the Faculty.

Proposal Development:

Conducts research to align promotional materials, proposals and letters of intent with language, terminology and style of individual FoM prospects.

Liaises with appropriate internal resources to obtain additional information to develop proposals and letters of intent.

Writes communications (letters, acknowledgements, correspondence, newsletter articles, etc.) on a case-by-case basis on behalf of the Dean for use in creating awareness, promotion of Faculty members and Faculty initiatives and priorities as well as the solicitation and stewardship of prospects and donors.

Conduct market research (individually, and with Central uOttawa Research Office) as required for the preparation for individual, corporate and foundation prospective donor meetings.


  • Reporting &

Pipeline Management:

Provides administrative support to the Faculty of Medicine Advancement team by requesting reports from central uO, creating tools and reporting on issues, implementing donor updates and creating a donor pipeline for the team.

Updates critical information on the medicine donors in the Raisers' Edge (RE) system. Assists with updates in RE and works alongside colleagues to ensure information is shared and updated in the system.
