As the
Lead Ecologist, you will provide our team in
Toronto with support and expertise in field biology, regulatory strategy, analysis, and permitting.

You'll join a group of other biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and planners to work on a variety of natural heritage projects including; Environmental Assessments (EA), Environmental Impact Studies (EIS), Natural Heritage Evaluations (NHE), Species at Risk (SAR) surveys, arborist surveys and fisheries assessment

You'll primarily work with engineers and Project Managers from cross business group projects including linear water conveyance, transportation, water/wastewater treatment, mining and contaminated sites, on screening projects with the agencies (i.e. MECP, MNRF, DFO and Conservation Authorities), terrestrial and aquatic field surveys, data management and technical reporting. The position will mainly consist of office duties, with an option of assisting with field duties, if required.


General Duties and Responsibilities include:


  • Leading and mentoring a small team of multidisciplinary (terrestrial, aquatics, wildlife, species at risk) field ecologists and arborists.
  • Provide expertise with natural environment permitting, navigating the agencies and managing client expectations regarding environmental risk
  • Lead and organize Natural Environment tasks which will include:
  • Wetland delineation, Targeted SAR surveys, Ecological Land Classification (ELC), mammal and herptile surveys;
  • Fisheries assessment, including physical surveys, spawning surveys, habitat characterization and fish capture (i.e., electrofishing);
  • Submitting and securing permitting approvals (i.e., Conservation Authority regulations, Endangered Species Act and, Species at Risk Act and various selfassessment, screening and Fisheries Act Authorities under DFO);
  • Tree surveys, site rehabilitation/restoration, compensation plans and other arborist duties
  • Technical reporting, agency consultation, site meetings and coordination with other business groups
  • Position may include exposure and experience relating to environmental sciences and geology tasks.

Here's What You'll Need:


  • BS or MS with a basic or applied science degree
years experience,

  • Experience leading and mentoring junior and intermediate staff

Preferential qualifications would include:


  • Backpack Electrofishing,
  • Certified Inspector, Sedimentation and Erosion Control (CISEC), Ontario Wetland Evaluation Systems (OWES),
  • Ecological Land Classification,
  • ISA Certified Arborist,
  • Bat Echolocation,
  • Butternut Health Assessor (BHA),
  • Ministry of Transportation (MTO): Fisheries Specialist/Contracts Specialist, Terrestrial and Environmental Monitoring during Construction, MTO/DFO/MNRF Fisheries Protocol
