The Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto invites applications for a two-year Contractually Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Museum Studies, with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2024, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Alternatively, applicants must have a Master's degree with at least six years of significant professional experience in the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) sector alongside extensive teaching experience in a degree granting program. Relevant fields of study for both Ph.D. and Master's include, but are not limited to: museum studies, arts management, history, anthropology, education, information studies, media and communication studies, Indigenous studies, environmental studies.
Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, as well as teaching experience in a degree-granting program, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interested in teaching-related scholarly activities. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.
We seek applications from individuals who center decolonial and community-based values holistically across their teaching practice, and who can prepare our students for the professional complexities of work in museums and cultural institutions. The successful candidate will have knowledge of and be able to teach museum planning and management, including museum finances and fundraising; work integrated learning courses (e.g. internships); and evaluation, visitor research, and audience engagement. Candidates will be expected to teach required and elective graduate courses that combine the academic study of museums with the practical application of theories and ideas. In addition, the candidate will teach other courses as needed in the curriculum and that match the candidate's areas of substantive expertise.
Teaching stream faculty members are expected to combine their expertise in the discipline with best practices in teaching to create rich learning environments that embrace diversity, promote equity, and integrate cutting-edge teaching approaches in a manner that challenges students to develop skills and ethics to be leading citizens.
Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through a mix of teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, workshops, panels and events organized, peer reviewed publications, other pedagogical or tutorial materials and activities (e.g., multimedia assets), evidence of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application that should include a strong teaching philosophy statement, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations. Teaching excellence will be evaluated commensurate with the candidate's career stage, considering the life, trajectory, and any special circumstances (e.g., career interruptions) as outlined in the submitted materials.
Professional work experience is a must for this position, demonstrated through a proven record of practice and/or leadership in museums and heritage with deliverables such as: strategic plans, fundraising initiatives, design of racial equity policy documents and plans, application of inclusive exhibition development practices, collaborative projects, innovation in museum education, programming and participatory practices, consulting, or community heritage-related initiatives.
