EY's multidisciplinary Business Tax Incentives - BTI - team, specializes in tax credits for Scientific Research and Experimental Development - SRED - and Capital Asset Reviews - CAR.

We are a dynamic, multidisciplinary group of tax, audit and science and technology professionals who work with companies of all sizes in a variety of industries to help them maximize their tax credits and achieve their business objectives.

We're looking for a qualified Tax Technician to join our team in Halifax.


Position description:

The CAR group is part of EY's national business tax incentive practice.

Capital Asset Reviews involve performing a detailed review, analysis and classification of clients' major capital asset acquisition projects for tax purposes.

Direct costs related to facility construction and equipment as well as indirect costs such as engineering and architectural are part of the CAR.

This role involves extensive interaction with internal EY colleagues as well as external client finance and project management professionals.


Required qualifications:


  • A degree or diploma in Accounting or in Business, with an accounting focus
  • Proficiency with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • The desire and disposition to analyze and reconcile financial and costing information
  • Excellent organizational ability and a high attention to detail
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication ability and exceptional interpersonal skills

Other desired but not required qualifications include:

  • Work experience related to construction accounting such as project accounting or asset classification and allocation
  • Business writing experience such as drafting a project overview, summary or process flow activities
  • Exposure to capital cost allowance tax depreciation rules
  • A commitment to learning construction industry terminology, income tax asset classification rules, assets utilized in various industries and use of technology tools to streamline CAR processes

Responsibilities:

Working closely with Senior CAR team members, the Tax Technician will

  • Perform initial detailed costing analysis of client project costs, including construction, equipment and other indirect costs
  • Draft project overviews of client capital projects
  • Prepare facility square footage area analysis
  • Draft initial tax technical narratives to support classifications of assets
  • Prepare CAR overview presentations for potential clients
  • Assist with the preparation of CAR Statements of Work
  • Prepare client information requests
