The Open Space Strategic Planning Analyst supports the implementation of Edmonton's Community Energy Transition Strategy,

Climate Resilient Edmonton:

Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan, Breathe: Edmonton's Green Plan, Natural Connections, and the Ribbon of Green, by managing complex projects and programs, and by developing program recommendations and other implementation tools.

Specifically, this position will manage the integration of climate and environment reporting into the Land Development Application (LDA) council reports process through development of a project charter and supporting research, tools, and resources.

  • Manage a variety of complex climate, environment, and planning projects, through the development of a project charter and supporting research, tools and resources
  • Determine budget and resource requirements for projects, including future resourcing recommendations
  • Research, develop, and guide implementation of policies and procedures related to citywide policy for land use, environmental and open space planning, and climate resiliency planning
  • Provide expertise in current best practices and in municipal service delivery for climate resiliency, environmental and open space, and land use planning
  • Provide senior leadership with pertinent information regarding climate resiliency, environmental, open space, and land use planning to aid in understanding recommendations and decisions
  • Respond to inquiries by senior leadership and Council and Committees by crafting briefing memos and Council reports
  • Maintain current knowledge on changing environmental requirements and regulations and the changing climate and environment context
  • Identify activities to continually improve and achieve environmental and climate objectives
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • A university degree in public administration, urban planning, climate science, environmental science or a related degree; a masters degree in these areas is an asset
  • Project management training, designation or experience is an asset
  • Membership or eligibility for membership with one or more of the following professional organizations (or their equivalent) is an asset:
  • Canadian Institute of Planners
  • Project Management Professional certification
  • Alberta Society of Professional Biologists
  • Association of Alberta Forest Management Professionals
  • Alberta Institute of Agrologists
  • Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (P.Geo)
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive land use and/or policy planning experience in the public and/or private sector that includes:
  • Open space or environmental planning
  • Climate change planning
  • Land development planning
  • Broad and demonstrated experience in handling projects
  • Public and stakeholder engagement
  • Council interaction, including report writing and presenting
  • Significant knowledge of the practices and objectives of the City, and Edmonton's Land Development Application (LDA) process; direct experience is preferred
  • Detailed knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning in general, and environmental and open space and climate resiliency planning in detail
  • Significant knowledge of planning legislation, regulatory requirements and applicable governing policies and plans
  • Knowledge of climate science and the intersection of climate change with environmental and land use planning
  • Ability to communicate complex information effectively both verbally and in writing, to peers, stakeholders, management, and Council
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners and stakeholders and appropriately engage the public
  • Demonstrated conflict management skills
  • Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects appropriately
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently, achieving strict deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results in the context of a respectful, inclusive and serviceminded style
