    Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours bi-weekly(Commencing Immediately)Under the authority of the Medical Director Health PEI Provincial Laboratory Services the Clinical Chemist provides clinical leadership for the provincial clinical chemistry program, working in collaboration with the Provincial Technical and Medical Directors and Senior Technologists to provide laboratory support for clinical programs, create a framework and strategy for evaluation and improvement of test utilization, provide leadership for the provincial point of care testing program and ensure an effective quality assurance program for all possible areas of coverage (e.g. Point of Care, General Chemistry, Immunology, Toxicology). The position will be responsible for test development and maintenance, and will work with the provincial facilities to determine an appropriate test menu. A focus on assay validation, analysis of reference intervals, streamlined quality control, and teaching are also needed. The clinical chemist acts as a liaison between clinicians, external agencies and the staff of Clinical Biochemistry and participates in continuing educational activities of Health PEI.

    Duties include:

    • Providing clinical leadership for the Health PEI clinical biochemistry program and expert technical and scientific advice to the laboratory staff of all Health PEI laboratories;
    • Determining chemistry test menus in coordination with clinical departments/programs;
    • In conjunction with technical staff responsible for method selection and validation in chemistry testing;
    • Ensuring testing procedures conform to professional standards and regulation;
    • Reviewing and interpreting appropriate Biochemistry test results, carrying out formal clinical biochemical consultations;
    • Advising on or initiating other biochemistry tests as required and assisting in development of utilization guidelines for tests;
    • Working with the chief technologists and supervisors responsible for internal and external quality control;
    • Chairing the Provincial Point of Care Committee;
    • Responsible for developing relationships with referral laboratories;
    • Teaching medical technologists, medical students, residents, medical laboratory technology students;
    • Other duties as required.
