    Position: Occupational Therapist (OT) Extern / Physiotherapist (PT) Extern

    Department: Various Clinical Areas

    Status: Temporary Part-time and Temporary Full-time positions

    Hours: Various rotating shifts (Scheduling will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts)

    Site: Oakville, Milton, Georgetown

    The OT/PT Extern role is a transitional role where OT/PT students can gain clinical experience, specialty knowledge and self-confidence, as well as build on collaboration and communication skills.

    OT/PT Externs are unregulated health care providers and function to enhance team dynamics and contribute to overall patient care.

    Position Profile:

  • Provide support to the team by assisting with basic clinical tasks (i.e. Set up equipment, assist with wheelchair following patient) under the direct or indirect supervision of a regulated health care professionalAssist with turning, repositioning and patient transfers using Lifts and other transfer devices (as 2nd person) Assist patient with activities recommended by the health care team to maintain functional independence such as ADLs, transfers and ambulation
  • Answering call bells, addressing patient concerns where appropriate and advising the appropriate registered health professionals when assistance is required
  • Fostering a friendly environment for patients through social interactions and leisure activities
  • Documenting care provided
  • Supporting group exercise programs run by OT/PT or OTA/PTA
  • Wiping down surfaces or therapeutic materials
  • Transportation to the therapy gym if patient is already in a wheelchair
  • Candidate Profile:

    Occupational Therapist Extern:

  • Occupational therapy students in any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
  • Demonstrated ability to complete patient care tasks as directed
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with proven organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated confidence in knowledge, skills, judgement and ability to function in the team based model of care
  • Physiotherapist Extern

  • Physiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).
  • Demonstrated ability to complete patient care tasks as directed
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with proven organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated confidence in knowledge, skills, judgement and ability to function in the team based model of care
