KPMG Lighthouse Canada has an exciting opportunity for

Data Scientists (Intern/Co-op)

to join our team for 4-8 months starting in May 2023
**Please note that you must be enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary educational institution to be eligible for this opportunity.

**What you will do

  • Work with a group of data scientists, data engineers to solve interesting and challenging business problems using advanced data analytics, AI and ML solutions.
  • Utilize advanced analytical techniques to solve challenging business problems. Leverage a diverse set of technologies and tools to deliver insights.
  • Propose and develop results, models and rules engines using statistics, machine learning, Natural Language Processing, Linear Programming, etc.
  • Work with large volumes of data (structured and unstructured).
  • Perform quantitative analysis of data issues.
  • Work in teams or individuals to performance ETL/ELT (extract, transform and load) of data from a variety of databases, from SQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, Neo4j, etc.
  • Experience with large scale and or distributed processing methodologies such as Storm, Spark and many others.
  • Review data quality and definitions, and perform data cleansing and data management tasks.
  • Work with the engagement team to translate business and analytics requirements into a data strategy for the engagement including ETL, data model and staging data for analysis
  • Run queries for descriptive analytics and provide formatted result sets.
  • Proactively contribute to the creation of presentation materials relating to data activities for stakeholder discussions.
  • Bridge the gap between technical platform needs and business issues.
**What you bring to the role

  • Strong experience in analytics, statistics, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing and/or mathematics.
  • Problem solving ability through the use and/or development of algorithms, models, testing, etc.
  • Effectively communicate orally and written with peers within Data & Analytics teams, KPMG and the client.
  • Experience working in teams to perform ETL/ELT (extract, transform and load) of data from a variety of databases from SQL, NoSQL, Hadoop, Neo4j, etc.
  • Independent ability to review the data quality and data definitions, and perform data cleansing and data management tasks
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team to tackle structured or unstructured data processing problems across a diverse range of industries
  • Strong ability to use Python and other packages such as Pandas and NumPy for data analysis and cleansing tasks
  • Some experience with visualization tools (Tableau, PowerBI, QlikView, etc.)
  • Basic understanding of Data Warehousing and Data Modeling.
  • Experience or knowledge in one major cloud service: AWS, MS Azure and GCP.

Keys to your success:


  • Ability to explain data and analytics concepts to nontechnical team members.
  • Ability to understand and explain business value of data and analytics concepts.
  • Knowledge of machine learning to collaborate with the team on ML projects
  • Experience in visual exploration to perform data discovery and highlight insights
  • Knowledge of how specific visual components drive usability and understanding
  • A knack at telling a story with purpose. Strong facilitation and collaboration abilities to conduct discussions and workshop with engineers and business analyst to advocate for positive user experience and recommend potential solutions to identified problems
