Technical Buyer


The Supply Chain team is responsible for the sourcing, negotiation, contracting, logistics, risk management and vendor management for all products and services required to support the in-house engineering and manufacturing at Davis' AS9100 certified facility.

We are looking for a highly motivated and focussed Technical Buyer to join our Supply Chain team. This could be as a temporary contractual position or as a full-time permanent position in our Ottawa facility.


Reporting to the Supply Chain Manager, the Technical Buyer will coordinate procurement, ensure best pricing and delivery while also utilizing forecasting and analytic skills to meet inventory needs.

The Technical Buyer will review and update demand signals as required to ensure proper supply/demand elements are triggered in the ERP/MRP system.


The commodities that the Technical Buyer would source and procure would be of a complex nature, often where suppliers use tooling and fixtures, by forming or machining complex parts using various type of metals and specialty metals.


Job Description:


What your day to day would look like:

  • Initiate purchase requisitions, request for quotations and negotiate major purchases especially of a technical nature, and engage in all related aspects of contract management of those technical purchases with the goal of meeting or exceeding quality, delivery, and budgetary requirements.
  • Develop and manage relationships with suppliers, regularly communicate with suppliers including by means of videoconferencing.
  • Monitor order deliverables and ensure all elements of goods and services are delivered in accordance with the terms of purchase. This includes managing exceptions and expediting of the orders.
  • Works closely with the Engineering to ensure supplier technical capability and compliance throughout the procurement cycle. This includes working with Design Authorities and Suppliers.
  • Review and assess total supply chain risk and identify opportunities to minimize risk.
  • Proven Sourcing and Qualification of Suppliers to AS9100 or ISO Standards. Additionally, ensure all activities are carried out in compliance to department and company procedures.
  • Ability to review drawings and interact with Engineering, Design Authority and Suppliers.
  • Support Engineering and Design, on sourcing and quick turn request for R&D as well as production.
  • Manage all Return to Vendor activities caused by failed incoming inspections, reconciling transactions related to this, and working closely with Accounts Payable to ensure all purchase orders, receipts and invoices are reconciled.
  • Manage all contract purchases, cancellations, and reschedule delivery dates.
  • Use an ERP/MRP system for all procurement, scheduling and inventory related activities.
  • Experience in contract development would be an asset.

What we are looking for:

  • Technical diploma from a recognized college, preferably in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant buying experience preferably in an Aerospace and/or Manufacturing environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills and ability to multitask.
  • Knowledge and experience with commodities related to metals and specialty metals.
  • Knowledge and experience in an ERP/MRP environment.
  • Experience in inventory management (safety stock, reorder point)
  • Consistently works on complex assignments requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve issues.
  • Strong communication abilities both written and verbal in English.
  • Good report writing skills as well as proficiency in MS Excel.
  • Ability to obtain a Controlled Goods Security Clearance is mandatory.
