The Opportunity**The Language Coordinator will lead the logístical and pedagogical support and development of formal and informal YMCA language programming across the province. With a strong background in Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) curriculum guidelines, Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) as well as experience in program and team management this position will provide innovative and informed leadership to client focused language services.


Responsibilities Include

  • Supervise and support with program delivery of YMCA language programming across the province
  • Provide pedagogical, language acquisition expertise and program support to instructors including level appropriate curriculum and instructional design
  • Ensure effective implementation of program based on CLB and PBLA
  • Act as a professional resource and coordinating inservice training for language lead and instructors
  • Oversee and analyse student and program evaluation to inform ongoing development for YMCA Language programming
  • Manage and maintain instructor resources and digital library
  • Identifying trends and gaps in language delivery in Nova Scotia
  • Networking and liaison with other language training service providers
  • Research, test and implement alternative language delivery models & learning management systems
  • Provide resources and support to informal language learning activities at YMCA Immigrant Services through liaison with other program areas
  • Ensure standards and requirements are met through conducting quality assurance monitoring

Qualifications and Skills

  • Degree or postsecondary education in TESL, Linguistics, Education or related field of study from a recognized institution supplemented by a minimum of two years' recent related experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; Current TESL certification
  • Minimum of 23 years of supervisory role experience
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the settlement language sector teaching EAL to adults including curriculum development
  • Detailed knowledge of LINC curriculum guidelines, Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA)
  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams and working committees with a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong program and project planning, development and coordination skills
  • Research experience, demonstrated networking, rapportbuilding and strong communication skills
  • Experience in budget management, accountability, and reporting
  • Effective interpersonal and team leadership skills, exhibiting supportive, positive approaches
  • High level of initiative to work independently
  • Ability to manage multiple, competing deadlines and tasks
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills and working knowledge of educational IT equipment, language acquisition software and online resource
  • Valid Nova Scotia Drivers licence, reliable vehicle and ability to travel
