Bridge housing is a service that supports an intensive shorter-term accommodation, that fills the gap between staying in a shelter or staying outdoors.

When the individual can secure safe and appropriate housing connections are made to address the specific service and support needs of the individual.

Shift Schedule:
will be scheduled days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays in a 24/7/365 environment - with 8 hours shifts

JOB SUMMARY:


Reporting to the Supervisor, Homelessness Services, this position performs general food preparation, cooking and related duties for clients of the Shelter.

Provides client-focused service by preparing, cooking, serving meals, snacks, meal planning and food ordering. With the use of recipes and menus, cooks nutritional meals and snacks, taking into account any dietary restrictions. Maintains high standards of quality and cleanliness and works according to and maintains all applicable health standards.


The Shelter operates 24/7/365, providing temporary shelter to individuals who are experiencing homelessness, including those that may be living with severe and chronic mental illnesses, addictions issues, and/or in recovery.

The Cook works as part of a team that supports clients from a trauma-informed approach, ensuring hospitality, dignity, and respect during their stay at the Shelter Program.


QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION:


  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; plus 1 year additional education in cooking, food service, culinary arts, nutrition, sanitation, or a related field is required
  • Current Safe Good Handling Certificate
  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid
  • Naloxone certification, Trauma-Informed approaches, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training are assets

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:


  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience in food preparation for groups of 50+ people, preferably in a shelter, congregate care, institutional environment or similar setting
  • Strong knowledge of kitchen operating procedures and food handling, storage and safekeeping
  • Experience working with homeless or other vulnerable populations is an asset
  • Knowledge of clientcentred, traum
