Working for IST


Reporting to the Windows Infrastructure Services Team Lead, the Systems Administrator provides system administration for operating systems on servers that run critical and central services used by campus users, as well as external clients.


Position


The duties and responsibilities include performance and security monitoring of servers to ensure efficient operation and to meet business and service requirements; working with other teams and/or vendors in troubleshooting and root cause analysis of issues affecting hundreds of users or computers; works in projects and provides technical expertise for service deployments.

The incumbent may participate in a 24-hour, 7-day on-call support rotation and as well as scheduled off-hour maintenance.

The Team is responsible for the administration of Operating systems on servers that run centrally managed campus wide services and departmental administrative services, as well as servers and services hosted for external clients.

The number of servers the team is currently responsible for is approximately 900 and growing.


Duties

  • Administers many Windows servers that run critical University services.
  • Applies system and security patches as in defined guidelines and best practices.
  • General administration of servers that support services in the central domain, and in any satellite domains that IST supports.
  • Provides input in developing standards for servers operating systems, security policies, best practices.
  • Monitors all servers and services to ensure availability and efficiency of services.
  • Administers of Windows File Services such as DFS.
  • Audits file permissions.
  • Proactively and reactively handles alerts produced by the central monitoring service.
  • Coordinates outage windows with clients and teams when necessary.
  • Documents any information gaps on new and existing servers and services.
  • Leverage automation technologies to help with Windows administration.
  • Installation and configuration of operating systems and security tools on both physical and virtual servers.
  • Installation and configuration of special purpose devices.
  • Works with other teams and clients to ensure systems are configured and deployed properly and in accordance with the team's policies.
  • Leverages automation technologies to help with VM and OS deployment and configuration, as well as installation of tools and software.
  • Troubleshoots issues affecting users and performs root cause analysis. Some issues may involve multiple systems and may require modification of existing procedures to resolve, as well as working with other teams within IST.
  • Works with vendors to develop workarounds or solutions to problems.
  • Provides technical expertise in delivering new services, troubleshooting problems.
  • Documents systems architecture, configurations, critical procedures and actions to be taken in troubleshooting problems.
  • Works to develop expert levels of proficiency in technologies that are implemented on servers and services managed by the team.
