The Cancer Education Program strives to equip patients and family with the information they need to cope with cancer through the provision of high quality education tools and support.

The Patient and Family Library is an essential resource for patients, families and staff. As a central hub for vetted, timely health information, the Library is crucial to providing personalized health information and resources and improving the patient experience across the care continuum


Position Summary
As an integral member of the Cancer Education team, the Library Technician, under the supervision of the Librarian/Manager, contributes to the administrative, operational and technical activities of the Patient and Family Library


The principal responsibilities include:

daily operations of the Patient and Family Library; assisting patients and staff with requests for information; providing customized health information searches and consultations; helps to stock the Library with patient education materials; helps maintain resource centres.

This role includes performing cross-functional duties as assigned or requested, and performing other duties consistent with the job classification as required, and is ideal for someone who has an interest in health librarianship.


Duties

  • Conducts information consults and provides consumer health reference services to patients, families, members of the public and healthcare professionals to support patient education and health literacy
  • Supports patients and families in navigating hospital spaces and systems; provides information on referrals to other departments or community agencies as appropriate
  • Assists with daily operations of the Patient and Family Library including opening and closing duties as needed
  • Conducts literature reviews and environmental scans as needed
  • Performs client registration and book circulation activities
  • Supports collection development and acquisition process
  • Gathers and reviews usage statistics
  • Facilitates a safe, shame and blamefree environment for all patrons; prioritizes patient and worker safety

Qualifications

  • Postsecondary Library Technician diploma recognized by the Canadian Library Association, or recognized equivalent
  • One year of library reference experience, preferably in a health related environment
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated tact, discretion, judgment and commitment to excellence
  • Familiarity with consumer health information and health literacy
  • Detailoriented, excellent time management and problem solving skills
  • Selfmotivated and able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience working with, or supervising, volunteers an asset
