SCOPE

Reporting to the Technical Supervisor of Communication Studies, the incumbent will configure, and maintain sound equipment, sound studios, video cameras, projectors and 3D printers within the department of Communication Studies.

The Media Technician is responsible for the efficient maintenance and repair of a large inventory of equipment to support our Sound, Moving Images, Intermedia programs and equipment depot and Makers Space.

As well as maintaining proper working conditions of classrooms and Labs in the CJ Building through regular maintenance of AV equipment within the rooms as well as the Crestron Units and other Audio/video interfaces approved by the university.

The incumbent is required to keep abreast of latest processes, software and equipment needs related to the Departments. Understanding of the changing Technical needs of the Departments.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Regular inspection of Sound and Edit Studios, Media Creation Space to ensure smooth operation, e

g:
ensure that the facilities and equipment are well maintained and in proper operating condition.

  • Interact with instructors and staff to ensure classrooms are maintained and functioning properly. Classroom inspection of Crestron systems.
  • Establish safe working procedures to ensure that proper care and attention is taken in working methods and equipment usage.
  • Maintain and repair studio microphones, recorders, analogue equipment, 3D printers and other necessary equipment.
  • Work with instructors and faculty to set up lab spaces according to needed configurations for instruction of labs.
  • Transfer of specialized technical expertise in the operation of equipment in the department and enforce adherence to safety regulations and proper practices.
  • Evaluate and manage issues and related to repairs and calibrate equipment.
  • Coordinate and contact the appropriate personnel within Maintenance Operations, Security, Cleaning Services, Health & Safety, Fire Safety and other Maintenance Service Units and submit request for work order repairs for facilities as requested by the Supervisor.
  • Deploy equipment from CJ Depot & Makers Space depot as needed.
  • Confer with staff, faculty and management to establish requirements for new systems or modifications, including making recommendations for purchases of hardware, software and spare parts for labs.
  • Oversee the installation of new specialized equipment when required.
  • Perform other duties as required by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Diploma of Collegial Studies (3 year technical DEC) and four years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline and two years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced working knowledge of a broad range of equipment and proven diagnostic skills. Proven skill sets to maintain a wide range of audio and video equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Pro Tools and Ableton and other sound recording software.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe CC Suite and various NLE software.
  • Working Knowledge of 3D printers.
  • Oversee and modify the contents of modern digital production camera kits.
  • Have a working knowledge of professional digital camera operation.
  • Good Understanding of

Digital File Formats:
WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, MOV, M4V, MP4, etc.

  • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations, best practices.
  • Excellent problemsolving and organizational skills and ability to work independently and efficiently under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively to a team.
  • Basic knowledge of Word (to create documents) and of Excel (to input data). Ability to work with Outlook.
  • Physical ability to perform primary responsibilities (for example: standing, walking and crouching) attested by successful completion of medical evaluation to the University's satisfaction.
  • Have physical ability to occasionally lift/carry/move without assistance up to 23 kg (50 lbs.).
  • Previous experience within an educational environment is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of production software such as: Pro T
