Conditions of Employment:

Qualifications:

Essential:


  • A Bachelor's degree with specialization in geography, land use planning, or resource management, a College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a comparable combination of education and related work experience may be considered.
  • Experience in land use planning.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical and nontechnical correspondence and reports.
  • Experience working with survey and elevation data.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with department staff, external agencies, other professionals and the general public.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize workloads to meet strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and problemsolving skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts and stakeholders.
  • Experience working independently with a high degree of initiative.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, hydrology, flood plain management, flooding/erosion risk assessment.
  • Ability to supervise and lead staff.

Desired:


  • Knowledge of Provincial Land Use and Water Policies as they relate to development in flood risk areas or hazard lands, and the Water Resources Administration Act.
  • Familiar with bylaws and development plans.
  • French communication skills would be considered an asset.

Duties:


This position reviews, assesses and recommends on the suitability of land use and developments with respect to hazards such as flooding, erosion and bank instability.

Under the direction of the Senior Flood Protection Planning Officer, the position reviews private land subdivisions, crown land proposals, development plans and zoning by-laws and provides design flood information on water bodies to the public, consultants and other government agencies.
