Position Summary:


The Department of Physics offers a series of essential experimental laboratory courses to introduce experimental techniques and procedures to a large population of U0 students as well as Physics Majors and Honours.


Reporting to the Chair of the Department, the Undergraduate Laboratory Manager will oversee the day-to-day activities related to the administration and operations of the Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories, ensure the smooth functioning of laboratories, oversee the purchasing, operation, and maintenance of lab equipment, troubleshoot and resolve administrative and technical issues, supervise technical staff, and establish safe work practices in support of teaching, all in accordance with the Department's goals and learning objectives.


Primary Responsibilities- Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day activities of all Physics Teaching Laboratories across campus (in the Wong and Trottier Buildings).

Act as a point person for all operations including escalated requests and problems, and determine the course of action.- Plan and develop administrative standards, practices, and systems to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

Participate in the implementation of policies and initiatives that support the direction of the teaching labs by keeping abreast of new developments.- Manage a team of technical staff.

Perform several HR functions including staff training, workload allocation, performance management and conflict resolution.- Work together with course instructors to plan and implement course experiments.- Oversee the implementation and execution of course experiments by the technical staff and manage the schedules of all laboratories.

Work closely with Lab Course Instructors to ensure all materials and equipment are available and functioning.

Act as a backup person to support labs when required.- Oversee laboratory equipment, instruments, and tools such as hardware, electronics, mechanical systems, optics, lasers, chemicals, radioactive sources, cryogenics, magnetic systems, sensors, vacuum systems, computers and associated peripherals/acquisition systems, and specialized software.

Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with supplies and equipment breakage that require complex analysis, hands-on work, and decision-making.- Manage and maintain a detailed inventory of laboratory materials and equipment using a specialized database.- Oversee and maintain software and computing infrastructure for all labs.- Manage laboratory access for students, staff, and faculty.- Analyze and evaluate the condition of scientific and technical equipment.

Plan the physical resources and make recommendations for maintenance or replacement of equipment based on the needs of the Department, including major purchases.- Purchase laboratory apparatus such as scientific instruments, computing equipment, supplies, software, and hardware.- Manage the budget and plan expenditures for the teaching laboratories (approximately $50,000-$100,000 annually).

Track expenses and prepare appropriate financial reports and documentation.- Implement safe work practices and ensure compliance with well-defined safety procedures.- Write testing protocols, managing reports and other required documentation.- Liaise with external organizations such as vendors and internal units for requests including the rental of the facilities.- Perform other miscellaneous duties related to running Physics teaching labs.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities- Undergraduate degree in physics or a related field such as electrical engineering.- Knowledge of teaching physics laboratory techniques and experience working in a laboratory setting.- Knowledge of readout electronics and basic digital signal processing.- Knowledge of software programming languages, especially Python.- Supervisory experience with the proven ability to mentor and develop staff.- Experience with budget planning and tracking.- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team within a fast-paced, dynamic environment.- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask.- Problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot, assess and resolve problems.- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to interact and work effectively with groups of individuals with differing professional backgrounds (e.g. students, technical staff, instructors, faculty members, and vendors).- Clear communication and writing skills for reporting and documentation.- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing.
