THE ROLE


The Cafe Manager is a key member of the company's café management team, responsible for providing leadership at our Main Street location, including leading and inspiring the team to deliver on an exceptional customer experience, café goals, maintaining and training operational excellence, building a strong culture of customer-focus and coffee excellence, drink menu creation, and other key projects to help continue to support 49th Parallel's exceptional experience and leadership.


This position will serve as a positive role model, driving our 49th Parallel passion for coffee and culture both internally and externally, and will exemplify the company's culture and values.

The position will be based in the lower mainland and will report to the District Manager.


CAFÉ MANAGER PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be responsible for the overall operations of the café and duties will include but not be limited to:

  • The daily operation of the café.
  • Organization of staff positions and responsibilities. Delegating tasks to ensure the café runs smoothly, efficiently, and can achieve financial targets.
  • Efficiently plan for daily and weekly needs, as well as special events.
  • Involved in decision making relating to adjusting service and changing menus and implementing these changes.
  • Responsible for all hiring, disciplinary and firing decisions relating to the Front of House café team, adhering to the CBA when applicable.
  • Writing a profitable staff schedule using daily and weekly sales reports to assess labour costs and adjusting as necessary.
  • Weekly and monthly inventory counts and ordering with suppliers. Assessing sales to set pars.
  • Dealing with customer enquiries and complaints, following protocol for how to escalate issues beyond your remit.
  • Maintaining a health and safety plan that adheres to legislated requirements under the ESA, WorkSafe BC, and the Company's policies; ensuring the café's culture supports an inclusive environment, and addressing claims of bullying, harassment, and discrimination in line with the Company's _Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination_ in the Workplace policy.
  • Handling special orders from customers, and arranging the use of the cafe space for special events.
  • Partner with the Back of House team to support and achieve mutual Café goals.
  • Continued assessment and development of staff, to include service training and coffee specific training within the café as follows:
  • Onboarding and orientation (coffee and culture-focused)
  • Brew bar training
  • Till training
  • Routine training (open and close)
  • Supervisor training (routines, open, closing)
  • Assistant Manager training
*Other duties and special projects may be assigned from time to time.


QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Very passionate about coffee; exceptional knowledge of coffee equipment, extraction techniques and a demonstrably good palate.
  • Excellent customer focus, internally and externally; strong leadership capabilities
  • 3 years' experience in specialty coffee service, 2 in a management role, with significant knowledge of espresso extraction and brewed coffee methods.
  • Working knowledge of manual and volumetric espresso machines, and basic maintenance.
