    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    SENIOR SCHOOL PHYSICAL and HEALTH EDUCATION TEACHER/CURRICULUM LEADER (FULL-TIME)

    We are currently inviting applications for the position of Physical and Health Education Teacher/Curriculum Leader. This is a full-time position and includes a teaching load of .80 FTE and .20 FTE Curriculum Leader commencing September 1, 2026.

    PRINCIPAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Prepare and deliver the core Physical and Health Education program requirements in assigned grade levels following the BC Ministry of Education curriculum in alignment
    with the Southridge Senior School Educational Plan
    • Develop and design unit plans and lessons with clear learning intentions
    that enable students to strive for their highest level of achievement
    • Maintain deep knowledge of grade-level curriculum and subject matter
    • Create a learning environment where students engage actively, think critically, and explore ideas together using a student-centred, discussion-based, collaborative approach (Harkness)
    • Assess and report on student academic progress and essential skills, drawing attention to areas of achievement and areas requiring further development
    • Support the purpose and actualization of the Southridge mission, vision, and values and appreciate how these continuously shape and influence our community
    • Uphold age-appropriate behaviour expectations, including Senior School
    Student Code of Ethics and relevant policies and guidelines
    • Act as an advisor to build a sense of community and belonging within the advisory group while also monitoring and supporting each advisee s academic, co-curricular, and personal growth
    • Attend and participate in core school functions and special events
    • Participate in the co-curricular programme of the school
    • Additional duties and responsibilities as outlined in the Employee Handbook
    CURRICULUM LEADER - PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leadership

    • Set a positive example and provide leadership of colleagues to engage in a variety of professional development activities.
    • Lead the creation and implementation of a vision for how the Harkness philosophy is implemented in the subject area, work with department members to collect artifacts (videos/pictures/lesson plans) that showcase effective use of the Harkness philosophy to share with hires, new teachers, new students, parents and other interested parties.
    • Develop annual departmental goals that are informed by and aligned with the school s mission, vision, SSEP and strategic plan goals, and are reflective of the academic priorities
    of the school. Share progress toward goals with Vice Principal-Learning and Principal.
    • Assign teaching loads with the best interests of the students and the school in mind, considering teachers strengths and teaching experience in subject areas.
    • Mentor, encourage and support new teachers by viewing classes, lesson plans and student reports and provide feedback regarding student learning and implementation of the Harkness philosophy. Work with Harkness coaches to establish effective use of Harkness Philosophy in the subject area
      • Work with all teachers in the department and review evidence through classroom observations, assessment artifacts and other pertinent information to evaluate that teaching and learning goals are being met. Communicate performance concerns with the Senior School Principal for follow-up and support.
      • Work with Junior School teacher(s) in the subject area to develop a smooth transition of
      Grade 7 students to Grade 8.
      • Represent school at and participate in ISABC meetings that correspond with subject division and new initiatives.
      Administrative
      • Convene monthly department meetings to improve instruction, evaluation, reporting, reflection and feedback. Prepare an agenda and publish minutes to department members and Vice Principal-Learning.
      • Work with department members to develop and track the annual departmental budget, and departmental textbook budget.
      • Work with principals and human resources to hire teachers.
      Curriculum
      • Monitor the alignment between curriculum content and curricular competencies and assessments within the department.
      • Facilitate and model the implementation of the Harkness philosophy and other instructional strategies that support our school s strategic plan.
      • Ensure department curriculum documents are up to date in Atlas, as new school or Ministry initiatives occur.
      • Ensure that department members employ a variety of appropriate teaching and assessment strategies by having intentional, scheduled conversations with them; approve all final examinations/assessments to ensure they are aligned with department assessment philosophy and course syllabus.
      • Calibrate the use of proficiency scale grades (ES, MS,PS,NS) and the use of percentages in the department to ensure consistency within grade levels and between grade levels.
      • Ensure that courses are relevant, the content is suitable, and the standards are challenging.
      QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:
      • A Bachelor of Education degree, with undergraduate studies in Physical and Health Education.
      • Hold a valid BC teaching certificate or an independent teaching certificate
      • Must be highly collegial and a collaborative team partner
      • Excellent spoken and written communication skills and strong organization skills
      • A high level of initiative, energy and motivation
      • The capacity to function effectively within a busy, high-functioning department and school
      • A proactive and innovative approach to solving problems
      • Proven work ethic and a high level of integrity
      • Effective interpersonal skills to establish connections, build trust and
      rapport with students and parents
      • A proven understanding of children developmentally
      • Experience teaching at the Senior School level in an independent school environment is an asset
      • A second teachable subject area would be considered an asset
      • Experience teaching in a technology rich environment is an asset
      • The ability to work collaboratively with teacher and students
      • The ability to plan, organize and evaluate programs
      • A proactive and innovative approach to solving problems

      Southridge is excited to offer a competitive salary, with a pay scale the exceeds the Vancouver School District by 4%. Along with this, we have a comprehensive benefits package and a generous RRSP matching program, access to health and wellness activities including generous support for professional learning and development. The salary range for this position is from $72,637. to $118,503. plus, a stipend for the Curriculum Leader. Salary placement is based on years of teaching experience and educational accomplishments.
