If yes, consider this challenging opportunity with the Policy Division, Ministry of the Attorney General, where you will provide independent legal clerk support services for the Unit's professional staff engaged in legal and policy work, including research and analysis, policy development, preparation and organization of information.

What can I expect to do in this role?: In this role, you will:

  • plan and provide independent legal research and analysis
- support response to Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act requests
- research and collect various sources of information (example: legislation, regulations, policies and programs in other jurisdictions, surveys)
- draft and support the development and finalization of content for official legal/policy documents
- answer legal/policy related telephone calls
- perform paralegal duties such as summarizing transcripts of evidence from discoveries, organizing files, and preparing casebooks to assist lawyers with litigation and files, drafting affidavits and other documents
- perform related administrative and clerical services


How do I qualify?:


Specialized Knowledge:


  • You have knowledge of related legal terminology to perform research and analyses, provide factual information and explanations of legal/administrative policies and procedures
  • You have knowledge of legal research and analytical techniques to find and assess relevance and importance of common/basic provisions in statutes
  • You have knowledge of legal office practices to review legal documents, initiate followup, coordinate activities, interpret and provide process guidance

Research, Analytical, Problem-Solving and Judgment Skills:

  • You have research, analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail skills to research, review and summarize legal/policy documents and precedents
  • You can provide status reports and statistical data, and ensure accuracy at all times
  • You demonstrate judgment, discretion and initiative to assess relevant issues, obtain additional information, research and prepare materials
  • You can determine confidentiality of privileged information and its release conditions

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You have the ability to use appropriate legal terminology in order to consult, provide sensitive information and explanations, exchange legal information (example: with the legal profession, investigators and other staff), and make recommendations
  • You can compose routine and complex legal and policy material, prepare initial research, reports and analyses

Customer Service and Teamwork Skills:


  • You have customer service and teamwork skills to maintain positive working relationships, ensure timely and accurate outputs that comply with legislation and policy, respond promptly to issues and requests

Planning and Organizational Skills:


  • You can plan, organize and manage several ongoing tasks, prioritize workload and meet deadlines in high pressure environment

Computer Skills:


  • You have proficiency with office equipment, PC and related software (example: MS Office, MS Project, Outlook, internet, intranet) to input/extract data, manipulate text and data, produce official legal and policy documents, produce letters, legal memoranda, reports and caserelated documents
