EDUCATION ASSISTANT (Temporary)

ONE POSITION FOR RUTH KING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THIRTY HOURS PER WEEK.

TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN A VARIETY OF CLASSROOMS INCLUDING A STUDENT/STUDENTS WITH AUTISM, NEEDING BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT AND LEARNING ASSISTANCE.


CANDIDATES MUST:


TAKE DIRECTION FROM TEACHERS AND SUPERVISORS
WORK AS A MEMBER OF A TEAM AND FOLLOW STUDENT PROGRAM AS DIRECTED IN IEP

IMPLEMENT ADAPTED/MODIFIED CURRICULUM


IMPLEMENT LIFESKILLS CURRICULUM
PREPARE VISUAL SUPPORTS AND IMPLEMENT LOW TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

IMPLEMENT AND INTEGRATE MATERIALS AND STRATEGIES NECESSARY FOR TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS


DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

BE ABLE TO PHYSICALLY SUPPORT STUDENTS
FACILITATE DAILY LIVING SKILLS (DRESSING, FEEDING, TOILETING)

IMPLEMENT DAILY EXERCISE PROGRAM UNDER DIRECTION OF A PHYSIOTHERAPIST

DEMONSTRATE INDIVIDUAL INITIATIVE JUDGEMENT AND ABILITY TO COLLECT DATA

DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF BEHAVIOUR STRATEGIES AND HAVE TRAINING IN BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT SKILLS

DEMONSTRATE AND PRACTICE PROACTIVE BEHAVIOUR STRATEGIES AND MUST BE ABLE TO WORK EFFECTIVELY WITH STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR

DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL INTERACTION AND PEER FRIENDSHIPS

FACILITATE DEVELOPMENT OF SELF-MONITORING SKILLS AND BUILDING STUDENT INDEPENDENCE

HAVE A RECOGNIZED CPI, OR ALTERNATE NON-VIOLENT CRISIS PREVENTION CERTIFICATE

HAVE A RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATE IN AUTISM;

HAVE A RECOGNIZED TEACHING ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE OR EQUIVALENT
QUALIFICATIONS AS PER JOB DESCRIPTION.

RATE OF PAY AS PER THE COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT.


DUTIES TO COMMENCE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND WILL CONCLUDE UPON THE RETURN OF THE INCUMBENT OR UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTIFIED BY THE HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT.

TITLE:

EDUCATION ASSISTANT

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of secondary school and additional specialized training.

Up to six months experience and or training applicable to the specific handicap identified.

Patience with and care for children, and a demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.

A love for, and desire to help, children.

An ability to work well with others.

Self-assurance and a well modulated voice with the ability to speak fluently and communicate well.

Appreciation of the confidential nature of all information relating to pupils, parents and teachers.

JOB GOAL:

To assist in providing a well organized, smoothly, functioning class/learning environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource materials.

Monitors and assists students during unstructured time such as recess, lunch hour, before and after school period and between classes.


Performance Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the teacher:
Prepares the classroom for student activities.


Assists the teacher and/or administration in duties relating to supervision of students on the playgrounds, during rest periods and other non-instructional times.


Assists the teacher and/or administration in duties relating to supervision of students in instructional periods in the classroom and in activities such as individual or group field trips.

Assists student during classroom activities.

Assists students with special needs such as toileting, dressing, eating, communicating and participating in activities.


Participates in staff discussions of individual students programs, and acts as a member of a team to set individual goals, and may if requested, confer with parents.

Works with individual students in developing skill areas such as self-help skills and in reinforcing concepts not mastered.

Records and charts student behaviour and learning goals if requested to.

Reports safety, unusual behaviour, and discipline concerns to the principal or designate, but resolves any minor disagreements where possible.

Ensures students enter the school at the end of breaks, as required.

Attends to minor cuts or bruises as required.

May be assigned supervision duties specific to each school.

Supervises the transfer of students to and from appropriate buses, as required.

May be required to work outside in inclement weather.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Maximum of six (6) hours per day during the school year of September through June.

Teaching days, September through June or when assigned students are normally in class.
