Location - This role is in-person at South Campus, Edmonton.

Position Summary

The Recreation Facility Operator I is one of several full-time and approx 4-6 casual staff reporting to the RFO Supervisor, Saville East/Foote Field. The Operator is responsible for the daily operation of Saville Community Sports Centre, Foote Field and the Saville Tennis Centre, including curling ice, tennis courts and sports fields. The Operator supports the safe, efficient and positive use of sport and recreation facilities managed by CCR. The Operator creates positive client experiences by interacting with clients as they monitor facility access and liaise with event supervisors, and by monitoring the safety and cleanliness of the facility during routine and regular facility inspections. The Operator creates a "presence" in the facility through highly visible facility monitoring. The Operator will work regularly on the curling ice.

The key job functions include ice preparation and maintenance, tennis court maintenance, general facility monitoring and maintenance, and event set-up and take-down. The Operator's daily activities include facility opening/closing (securing) procedures; equipment set up and take down; ice-preparation and maintenance, field maintenance, laundry service; operation, maintenance and repair of equipment, client interactions and casual staff coordination and leadership in accordance with the facility policies and procedures. In addition, the RFO I will be assigned duties and coordination responsibilities in several task areas, including hazard assessment, facility inspections, asset management, incident reporting and data collection and facility specific operational duties (fields, curling ice and dome operations). The fulfillment of these tasks is critical to the seamless operation of the building for safe, effective service to facility users. The RFO Supervisor may assign a greater number of duties in any area based on operational need. The Operator may be scheduled for standby shifts to support risk management of facility operations.

This position requires the ability to work a variable work schedule spanning 7 days a week in a rotating capacity working days, evenings and weekends.

The Campus Operations & Services team supports the University of Alberta through a range of essential services and works for operating, maintaining and renewing infrastructure across our campuses.

  • Install curling ice as directed by the Head Ice Technician and/or RFO Supervisor
  • Implements daily, weekly, monthly and annual ice maintenance procedures to ensure superior ice conditions, these may include "cleaning", "scraping", "burning", "re-flooding", and "pebbling";
  • Monitors ice plant operation and reports changes to the supervisor;
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the Saville Community Sports Centre, Foote Field and Saville Tennis Centre as required;
  • Implements all scheduled daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance requirements;
  • Repairs and maintains all nets, goal posts, clocks, scoreboards and other sport-related equipment in the facilities;
  • Implements daily, weekly, monthly and annual outdoor facility maintenance procedures during the spring/summer to ensure superior facility conditions on outdoor tennis courts, artificial turf, natural grass fields, and track facilities. Duties may include - "grass cutting", "top dressing and seeding", "turf sweeping", "field lining", "garbage clean up", or "power washing tennis courts";
  • Sets up and takes down equipment and site amenities for all outdoor events;
  • Regularly monitors customer usage of South Campus sport and recreation facilities, delivering customer service techniques that build positive public relations and customer rapport:
  • Ensures appropriate use of the facilities in accordance with the CCR and University policies and procedures;
  • Assists with onboarding new staff and ongoing training for staff as required;
  • Interacts with and supports casual staff members in all areas of South Campus sport and recreation facilities during evenings and weekends
  • Represent CCR values, engage in positive interactions with CCR and University colleagues, providing excellent client-focused service;
  • Understands, fulfills, and promotes the health, safety and environment responsibilities identified in University policy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required
  • Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver's license
  • Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver's abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years
  • Current Intermediate First Aid, Level C CPR required
  • Police Information Check required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Curling Canada Ice Technician certificates (Level 1 and 2) are an asset
  • Experience in an ice technician role is an asset
  • Experience and understanding the rules of curling is an asset
  • Experience in sport and recreation multi-sport facilities, grounds maintenance (ice, soccer fields, artificial turf, track and field facilities) is an asset
  • An undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, Recreation field is an asset
  • The forklift operator safety training course is an asset
  • Fall arrest training is an asset
  • Special skills like welding, carpentry and mechanics are an asset
  • Experience with Intelligenz Recreation Management Software, Google Apps, and Microsoft Office is an asset
