    The Opportunity

    We are currently looking for a System Security Engineer to join our Control Centre Operations team in Ragged Lake, Halifax. Reporting to the Grid Operations and Security Manager, you will support the safe, reliable, and secure operation of the Bulk Electric System through operational engineering activities.

    Key elements of this role include:

    Operations Planning:

  • Perform load flow and dynamic stability analysis using power system simulation software to establish system operating limits.
  • Prepare system operating procedures and operational guidelines for use by System Operators in the secure and reliable operation of the bulk power system.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain operational tools to aid System Operators in power system operations.
  • Assist in defining near-real-time operational data requirements for substation and generator additions to the power system.
  • Achieve and maintain accreditation as a NERC certified operator.
  • Planned Outage Coordination:

  • Perform load flow and dynamic stability studies in support of planned outage coordination.
  • Provide backup support for outage coordination. This process provides for the scheduling of planned outages in a secure and reliable manner, while balancing impacts to customers, economic dispatch, and adequacy of protection.
  • Forced Outages:

  • Support system operators in the real-time resolution of forced outages by performing load flow and dynamic stability studies using power system simulation software.
  • Prepare Short Term Operating Instructions to assist system operators in secure and reliable power system operation under abnormal conditions.
  • Provide after-hours support to System Operators as part of a stand-by rotation.
  • System Operator Training

  • Prepare, deliver, and maintain presentation materials for system operators under a NERC structured training program.
  • Keep system models and training scenarios for the operator training simulator current, and use this tool to deliver training to System Operators
  • Reliability Standards Compliance:

  • Maintain compliance with reliability standards as they pertain to the System Security functions of Control Centre Operations.
  • These skills will make you successful:

  • A Bachelor ́s degree in Electrical Engineering and a full member (or eligible for membership) with Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, a strong customer service ethic, good interpersonal skills, and are able to function effectively in a team environment.
  • Self-starter with proven organizational and analytical skills.
  • Strong computer skills and attention to detail.
  • A commitment to personal development.
  • Available to support emergency power restoration work.
  • A valid driver ́s license.
