Position Summary


The Department of Infection Prevention & Control is currently seeking a Permanent Full-Time Infection Control Practitioner to join their team.

The Infection Control department is seeking a Registered Nurse who has an interest in / passion for Infection Prevention and Control; to assist in implementing and maintaining an effective and progressive Infection Prevention and Control Program:

  • Provide on-site support to Long Term Care Homes/Retirement Homes within our local area, and possibly outside of the area. Support with respect to (but not limited to): policy development, outbreak-management, planning and preparedness, hand hygiene, environmental service process, supply audits, availability of supplies, cohorting practices.
  • Specific education and training to IPAC lead staff/home staff, with coaching and mentoring for the delivery of IPAC standards. Support assessments/audits of the current IPAC program/practices to strengthen the program.
  • Ensure proper signage is posted.
  • Must be able to travel with your own private vehicle.
  • Conduct surveillance activities according to established criteria and evidencebased research
  • Collect and input data into the computer
  • Provide consultation to all clinical and nonclinical areas on matters of infection prevention and control
  • Provide education inservices to staff, physicians and volunteers on infection prevention and control precautions
  • Conduct infection control compliance audits, monitor actions, recommend strategies. Direct healthcare workers as necessary to create positive outcomes
  • Keep current with infection control literature, standards, and guidelines
  • Investigate: participate in outbreak investigations and implement interventions to control the outbreak situations.

Department/Unit/Program Description


The goal of Ross Memorial Hospital's Infection Prevention and Control program is the prevention of infections in Hospital patients and staff and the control of infections should they occur.


To prevent the spread/transmission of infections to other patients, staff and the hospital environment, it is sometimes necessary to place patients in Isolation Precautions.

This may mean relocating the patient to a special isolation room, with an Isolation Precautions sign placed at the entrance to alert all staff, doctors and visitors that they must wear a gown and gloves or a mask (depending on the infection or bacteria).

Ross Memorial Hospital is participating in the Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN)

Essential Qualifications
Registered Nurse (RN); current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing

  • Experience working in a clinical area for at least three (3) years
  • Minimum one year working in Infection Prevention and Control preferred
  • Completion of an entrylevel comprehensive infection control course (such as that currently offered at Centennial College or Queen's University) preferred
  • Certification in Infection Control preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and problemsolving skills
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills, combined with knowledge of patient care practices, asepsis, infection control issues, outbreak investigation, surveillance and research techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of computer word processing and patient and lab information systems

Hours of Work
Must be available to work eight hour shifts, including days and weekends. Shift hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the ONA collective agreement.
