SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER - FULL TIME PERMANENT

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Mental Health Lead the School Social Worker plays a vital role in
addressing the various needs of students in an educational setting including providing brief
counselling and crisis services to students within the school, collaborating with families, making
appropriate community referrals, and consulting with principals and teachers on mental health
initiatives, promotion, and prevention strategies in the school.

  • Meeting with students individually to provide brief counselling services including
assessment, treatment, and discharge planning.

  • Respond to and provide crisis intervention including suicide risk assessment and the
development of safety plans.

  • Act as a member of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with administration and
educators in the schools to support staff concerned with student mental health.

  • Liaise with other mental health professionals within the school and community around client
care including referrals, continuity of treatment and recommendations.

  • Administrative tasks including accurate documentation of client notes using cloudbased
client management software.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Establishing therapeutic relationships with students
  • Advocating for clients within the school and broader community
  • Opportunities to provide mental health related education sessions to school staff, students
and caregivers

  • Facilitate groups with students related to current contexts and challenges
  • Knowledge of PHIPA, standards of practice and confidentiality with excellent oral and written
communication skills.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Social Work Degree
  • Member in good standing with the Ontario Association of Social Workers and Social Service
Workers

  • Three to five years' experience in social work with children and families
  • Familiarity with the Education Act and the culture of Schools.
