    Trades Landscaper (Continuous)

    Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department

    POSITION FUNCTION

    Coordinate and participation in Park hard infrastructure work at a trades level.

    KEY DUTIES

  • Assemble, construct, install and maintain various park, playground, and sports field infrastructure such as park furniture, pedestrian and vehicle barriers, signage, play structures, sports and fitness equipment, pathways, chain link and wood fences, stairs, retaining walls, drainage and drinking fountains.
  • Construct forms and pour concrete pads, conduct routine inspections of park, playground, and sports field infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain various tools and equipment such as drill, saw, grinder, compactor, jackhammer, level, trencher, operate vehicles, tractors, and excavators.
  • Read and interpret engineering plans, design drawings and location of utilities.
  • Maintain a variety of records, sketches and reports for maintenance and new installations.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles, perform equipment maintenance, report repairs required and damage to equipment, maintain fuel and equipment supply for staff at various work sites. Determine appropriate materials and equipment as required.
  • Provide work instruction to other staff on work methods and procedures.
  • Complete daily and seasonal work records and equipment slips.
  • Occasionally respond to enquiries from the public, City staff and outside agencies regarding general parks information.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.
  • INDEPENDENCE

  • Work is performed according to established procedures or programs or is assigned by supervisor.
  • Work is reviewed upon completion.
  • Issues such as major changes to approved designs are referred to supervisor.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work outside in all weather conditions. (continuous)
  • Work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to paint, primer, and glue. (occasional)

  • KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Understand and apply the techniques of carpentry, painting, finishing, plumbing, metalworking, concrete finishing, playgrounds, and landscape construction.
  • Use hand and power tools, equipment, and instruments.
  • Read and interpret engineering plans.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Work safely and follow established safe work procedures.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

  • High school graduation.
  • Completion of 2-year Horticultural Diploma or completion of 4-year BC Trades Qualification in landscape horticulture or an equivalent Diploma or Trades Qualification in a related field. (2 years)
  • Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification. (32 hours)
  • Current and valid Class 5 . Driver's Licence.
  • Experience:

  • 1 year of experience at trades level or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • OTHER:

  • May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
  • Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm (40 hour work week)

    $39.52 per hour, Pay Grade 10
