The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) helps protect society by independently, effectively, and fairly conducting prosecutions and appeals at all levels of court.

With approximately 550 Crown Counsel throughout British Columbia, the BCPS is divided into five regions - North, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver, and Vancouver Island-Powell River.

There are criminal appeals and special prosecutions offices in Vancouver and Victoria. Provincial headquarters is in Victoria.


BCPS Crown Counsel pre-approve charges and prosecute offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes, in accordance with BCPS policies and the Crown Counsel Act.

About the opportunity:


Are you a practicing lawyer in Canada with at least six years of post-call experience, and experience or interest in litigation and criminal law? If so, read on.

Reporting to Administrative Crown Counsel, you will be responsible for independently, effectively, and fairly pre-approving charges and prosecuting offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes.

Crown Counsel in BC are responsible for deciding whether to lay charges and which charges to lay. They conduct cases in court through to their conclusion in accordance with BCPS policies and the Crown Counsel Act.


Crown Counsel are responsible for ensuring that witnesses, victims, and families are dealt with in a considerate and courteous manner and that victims and their families are adequately prepared for court proceedings.

Compensation:


  • Crown Counsel 2 $163, $212, annually
  • Crown Counsel 3 $218, $251,188.04 annually
  • 20 days of annual vacation to start, increasing over time to 35 days, plus 8 additional earned days off and 2 supplemental leave days

Job Requirements:


  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing OR immediately eligible for call to the Bar.
  • Crown Counsel Level 2: 2019 call and earlier, with a minimum of 2 years recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including in the area of criminal law.
  • Crown Counsel Level 3: 2013 call and earlier, with a minimum of 2 years recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada, including in the area of criminal law.
  • Significant trial experience

Preference may be given to following:

  • Lawyers with 8 or more years of experience
  • Lawyers with recent (within the last 3 years) and significant criminal trial experience.
  • Lawyers with criminal prosecution experience.
  • Lawyers who speak, and are competent to conduct trials in, French.

This position is located in Port Coquitlam.

This position is included in the Crown Counsel Association. Under the Public Service Labour Relations Act, this position is excluded from union membership.
