Description:
Reporting to the Associate University Counsel and working as part of the University's legal office led by the Chief Legal Officer, the incumbent will provide legal advice primarily on procurement within the broader public sector, with a focus on IT-related issues, including data privacy and protection, intellectual property, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity standards.
The provision of legal advice will also, include a general requirement to advise proactively on developments in relevant statutes, regulations, policies and case law, legal exposures as well as risks and legal challenges and to assist on any legal issues.
The incumbent will support the University's broader legal group, as well as internal stakeholders, maintain and monitor the legal and contractual obligations of the University; performing legal and reputational risk management activities; performing commercial transaction/documentary review; and performing legal research.
Qualifications Required:

EDUCATION:
A Bachelors of law degree (LL.B) and/or juris doctor (J.D.) degree. Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario.

EXPERIENCE:
5-10 years' experience in legal practice; expertise in procurement law; strong knowledge and experience in commercial, intellectual property, privacy and technology law; experience preparing, reviewing and negotiating contracts in a complex environment; knowledge of the University environment and experience working within a University or post-secondary education environment is an asset; experience working simultaneously on a variety of complex projects with established deadlines and ad hoc requests is expected.
A combination of legal expertise of procurement law and technical knowledge of information technology issues, including data privacy and protection, intellectual property, and cybersecurity standards is an asset.
Familiarity with procurement within the broader public sector and specifically, the Broader Public Sector Accountability Act and directives is an asset.
Familiarity with international privacy laws such as GDPR and the emerging area of Artificial Intelligence law would be valued assets.
