Description

The Department of Athletics & Recreation provides students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the greater community the opportunity to pursue athletic excellence and recreational activities.

The mission of the department is to cultivate human potential and well-being through recreation and sport. The operating units of the department include interuniversity athletics, recreation, and sport medicine.


Reporting to the Director of Athletics & Recreation, with a dotted reporting relationship to the Manager, Inclusion & Anti-Racism Education, the Specialist, EDI & Anti-Racism, is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism programs and initiatives within the department of Athletics & Recreation, providing mentoring to student-athletes and representing the department in EDI and anti-racism initiatives across the University and in the higher education athletics sector.


The Specialist, EDI & Anti-Racism, fulfills their duties in a manner that reflects the diverse experiences and interests of equity-deserving groups (EDGs) and acknowledges and honours Indigenous wisdom, self-determination and ways of knowing.

The Specialist leads the design, delivery and evaluation of programs and other initiatives aligned with Athletics & Recreation's commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism along with a 3-5 year strategic planning goal undertaken in a manner that reflects the diverse experiences and interests of EDGs.

The Specialist fulfills the roles of consultant, advocate, teacher, navigator, facilitator, project manager and collaborator, working closely with Athletics & Recreation and University colleagues to create and sustain a culture and experience of inclusive excellence.


The Specialist is also a first line resource for support and information to students who identify as members of an equity-deserving group, ensuring safe spaces and processes to identify, to consult and refer to appropriate intake offices or leadership within the department on matters related to experiences of discrimination, harassment and/or active EIO Inclusion and Anti-Racism team member.

The Specialist, EDI will establish mutually beneficial professional relationships and sharing best practices and resources as part of this community of practice.


Accountabilities

  • Provide skilled project management services to the department in designing, planning, implementing and evaluating EDI and antiracism initiatives in collaboration with the department's leadership team, including but not limited to initiatives that reflect emerging evidencebased pedagogies for effective knowledge dissemination and skillbuilding in relation to EDI and antiracism, addressing such topics as the continuum of hate, implicit bias, intersectionality, systemic discrimination, allyship, active witnessing and bystander intervention, for example;
  • Develop benchmarks and metrics to inform, measure and evaluate progress, as well as opportunities for improvement;
  • Develop and deliver a mentoring support program to studentathletes/students in the department who identify as members of an equitydeserving group;
  • Support the recruitment, orientation, and ongoing engagement studentathletes/students who identify as members of an equitydeserving group, in support of building a safe and inclusive environment, where diversity is celebrated;
  • Act as staff liaison for the BIPOC Student-Athletes' council and provide insight and direction to program development, in keeping with EDI and antiracism strategies and best practices;
  • Promote awareness of, and relevant participation in, initiatives of the Office of Equity & Inclusion and Athletics & Recreation, and establish effective collaboration with these offices to both inform and learn from initiatives implemented within the department;
  • Maintain statistics on the number and reach of events, campaigns, programs and activities;
  • Lead and coordinate the planning, creation and dissemination of monthly communications (e.g. departmental newsletter, faculty and staff portals) designed to build, sustain and strengthen individual and collective capacity for inclusive excellence, including researching and writing key content;
  • Develop, monitor and reconcile budgets related to EDI and antiracism initiatives;
  • Work in collaboration with the Associate Director, High Performance and Coaches to develop strategies to support the recruitment and participation among equity deserving groups of studentathletes;
  • Work in collaboration with the Associate Director, Recreation & Healthy Living to develop outreach strategies to ensure participation among equitydeserving groups in camps, clubs, and extracurricular programming;
