    Rate of Pay: As per CUPE Collective Agreement $34.53

    Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement Local 3876.

    Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, the Lead Head Mechanic will be responsible for assigning and the overseeing the work performed in the bus garages (Western area) as well as perform work up to and including journey level trades in motor vehicle maintenance and repairs for school buses and other fleet vehicles.

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

    • A Motor Vehicle Repair (Truck and Transport) Mechanic License required;
    • Experience in repairs and operations of school buses including, but not limited to, repair of diesel engines, airbrakes, power train, transmissions, fuel systems, cooling systems, steering electrical, suspension systems, welding tasks, as well as preventative maintenance tasks including oil changes and grease jobs;
    • Performing repairs and preventive maintenance within the Laws of the Province of Nova Scotia
    • Experience with Engine Diagnostic Computer Software required;
    • A Class 2B license with air brake endorsement required;
    • Demonstrate good written communication and organizational skills required;
    • Broad knowledge of safety procedures and practices required;
    • Five years' experience in trade required;
    • Previous experience as a Head Mechanic is preferred.

    Responsibilities:

    • To oversee the work of assigned staff and promote practices which enhance the safe operation of the garage and the mechanical operation of the bus fleet and other Centre for Education vehicles (if applicable) in accordance with approved standards, the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia and School Policies and Procedures;
    • Prioritize and assign work to mechanics working in the bus garages;
    • Complete all assigned work orders, and record hours and materials used;
    • To report to the immediate supervisor issues and concerns impacting on the safety of the garage staff, bus staff, or student transportation;
    • To certify all repair and inspection reports;
    • Respond to any after hour emergencies as required;
    • Ensure a clean, safe work environment according to policies and procedures;
    • Maintain the safe operation of all equipment used in the bus garage;
    • Perform all mechanical duties as assigned;
    • Other related duties as assigned.
