Safety Specialist to promote and enhance true Safety Culture at Whiteshell (WL).
What will you be doing?
- Assisting the Manager and Section Head, Health & Safety Services in the implementation of the Occupational Health & Safety Program, specifically in operational safety and industrial hygiene.
- Provide specialist support to line managers, workers, contractors, to help ensure that management's responsibilities related to occupational safety and industrial hygiene are fulfilled.

- Provide industrial safety expertise for operational and demolition activities.
- Develop hazard identification and mitigation techniques for operations and work control.
- Characterize the site hazards, develop inventories as per regulations and site procedures.
- Maintain worker exposure inventories, and support the health center in performing hearing testing and scheduling medical baselines.
- Perform monitoring for worker exposures to occupational safety and industrial hygiene hazards as required.
- Review and assist with work being planned and performed for contractors to ensure compliance with all company and government regulations, to ensure consistent approaches to work onsite.
- Work with line supervision and employees to ensure safety is integrated into all site activities.
- Identify problem areas from participation in workplace inspections and accident investigations and makes recommendations to line management for improvement.
- Under the guidance of the OH&S Program Management, develops and maintains occupational safety programs, policies and procedures, guidelines and training materials.
- Develop and delivers effective and efficient safety training, either directly to employees, or to line supervision so they can instruct their own employees.
- Assisting line management with incident investigations that identify apparent causes, root causes, and provides appropriate recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Assumes responsibility and accountability for special projects as assigned by the OH&S Program Manager.
- Acting as delegate for Section Head of H&SS as required.
- Foster and promote the WL Near Miss program.
- Promote Safety Culture by being a role model and setting the safety standard on site.
- Attend and actively participate in Fact Finding/Rapid Learning investigations.
- Acting as mentor to new employees, and visitors to our site.
- Maintain instrument calibrations and supply inventories to provide timely support to operations and project work.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
- Assisting the supervision and other safety section staff with the development and/or review of safety related training.
- Assisting line management with workplace monitoring, assessments, inspections and accident investigations. Includes supporting the identification and documentation of root causes and providing corrective actions/recommendation to prevent recurrence.
- Will be required to perform formal presentations to employees and line managers to deliver the results of an assessment, inspection or investigation.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
Education
- Occupational Health and Safety Professional designation.
Experience
- Five (5) or more years of relevant safety experience in construction/demolition environments involving heavy equipment.
- Industrial hygiene knowledge in areas such as Asbestos, Silica, hazardous chemicals/WHMIS, noise, heatstress, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment and clothing (PPE&C).
Security Requirements
- Security clearance eligibility required: Enhanced Reliability via Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).

- Initiative and judgement to organize and maintain flow of work and accuracy of records.
- Exceptionally organized and detail oriented with the ability to meet deadlines able to prioritize and manage work time effectively.

- Excellent interpersonal communication skills written and oral and proven ability to maintain successful working relations at all levels within the organization and with external stakeholders.
