Human Resources Health & Safety Advisor in Vancouver

JOB SUMMARY


Reporting to the HR Occupational Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor works collaboratively to promote occupational health and safety across PHS projects and programs.

This position acts as a resource providing consultation, guidance, and support on health and safety issues to the Human Resources team, management team and staff.

The Health and Safety Advisor completes incident investigations, trains managers and staff on safety practices, conducts inspections and audits, addresses safety concerns, and promotes a safety culture to eliminate occupational injuries and illness.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The job includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Engages staff and managers in the analysis of staff safety data. Supports in the development of action plans to address issues and ensures ongoing active manager and staff involvement in the maintenance and development of safety systems.
  • Participates in the planning, development and implementation of PHSwide safety policies, programs, and procedures to ensure safe operations and compliance with required standards and practices.
  • Supports in safety audits and the identification of safety training needs; develops and delivers training manuals, programs, safe operating procedures, and competencybased testing systems; collects and retains applicable data.
  • Works with regulatory agencies such as WorkSafe BC and liaises with areaspecific WSBC officers.
  • Conducts onsite visits to projects and programs to connect with staff and managers on safety concerns.
  • Assists managers with completing Violence Risk Assessments and employee safety surveys.
  • Reviews WorkSafe claims, Unusual Occurrences, and safety reports with managers. Assists managers to develop action plans to address safety issues and prevent future incidents.
  • Manages the collection, followup, tracking, and record keeping of incident investigations, corrective action plans, as well as compliance orders and reports completed by supervisors and management.
  • Manages the PHS Safety inbox. Organizes inbox files, provides daytoday guidance and timely responses to employee and manager inquiries and issues and completes required action for followup. Alerts applicable HR reps or managers of action items.
  • Undertakes, supports, and guides the completion of effective investigations of accidents and injuries. Submits investigations to WorkSafe BC and reviews with Joint OHS&S committees.
  • Achieves and maintains compliance with BC Worker's Compensation Act, WorkSafe BC OHS Regulation standards.
  • Participates and advises the OH&S committee and assists them to fulfill their role as determined under the Workers Compensation Act and Regulations. Updates OH&S documentation and creates safe work procedures and exposure control plans.
  • Participates in workplace safety inspections to ensure the inspections are completed regularly and on schedule.
  • Promotes safety awareness through ongoing education and training of staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Diploma in the field of occupational health and safety
  • Minimum of three years of experience in the health and safety field
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation
  • Experience identifying needs, planning and providing guidance and advice on safety initiatives
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical abilities
