Seasonal Term from April 2023 to September 2023, based on operations and weather dependent.

40 hours per week, shifts are scheduled at various times, weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays. Shift schedules will be based on operational needs.

The Opportunity:

We are hiring for a Crew Leader Seasonal working primarily within the Grounds department. This position will take direction and be under the supervision of the Grounds Supervisor.

Responsibilities include many elements of the day-to-day maintenance of grounds aspects across Assiniboine Park; maintaining the highest quality standards of horticulture practice as it relates to turf maintenance and aesthetics according to APC's master plan.


The Crew Leader will be responsible for being the crew leader of General Labourers Seasonal and Specialized General Labourers Seasonal, has input into day-to-day task planning, and will be required to keep ongoing records of their designated work area.

All responsibilities of the incumbent are as per the direct and daily instructions of the Grounds Supervisor.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Create work plans, establish work priorities and tasks with the Grounds Supervisor.
  • Work with available resources to meet daily seasonal fluctuations in workload to obtain maximum efficiencies and assist in the oversight of the timely implementation of all projects.
  • Oversee the training and work quality performed by the Specialized General Labourers Seasonal, General Labourers Seasonal and Volunteers, and in turn recommend changes as required.
  • Schedule and supervise seasonal grounds staff and ensure standards of performance and work quality of team members.
  • Operate power equipment, hand tools, medium duty equipment and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • Review effectiveness of seasonal staff performance to ensure adherence to approved work duties and procedures.
  • Evaluate performance and quality of work of subordinate staff in collaboration with the Grounds Supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Intermediate technology and computer skills. Proficiency with appropriate computer programs for record keeping and administrative tasks.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Crew Leadership or Supervisory experience is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills are required to provide clear instructions and training to new Specialized General Labourer Seasonal, General Labourers Seasonal and volunteers.
  • Must have basic mechanical aptitude for the operation of small engine machines, equipment and tools. Confidence and knowledge in use of hand power gardening tools.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:


  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, working outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to frequently handle heavy loads of up to 4550 lbs and the ability to push/pull lbs. Documentation of physical capacity may be required.
  • Availability to work days and some evenings and weekends as required.
  • Required to wear APC issued uniforms and provide own safety footwear and inclement weather clothing.
