Your role:

This assignment is to Ottawa Morning, Ottawa's No. 1-rated morning show, to work on the evening shift (approx 12PM to 8PM), from Sunday to Thursday.


Ottawa Morning helps listeners in the national capital get out of bed, out the door and onto their commute with all of the information they need each day.


As the show's Evening Producer you are committed to staying connected - with the news of the day and with the pulse of the city.

You are a smart journalist with a competitive spirit. You are thorough, organized and independent.

Your interests are wide-ranging and you connect easily with people from all walks of life - from cabinet ministers to school bus drivers.

Your curiosity drives you to discover. You have a facility for turning your discoveries into exciting radio.


As the Evening Producer for Ottawa Morning, you are responsible for generating great ideas, gathering tape from a variety of sources, researching and writing scripts, assisting the Senior Producer with vetting scripts, and for connecting with colleagues in the newsroom on a daily basis.

You are also the last one to tie together the loose ends before the morning crew takes over in the early hours.

You work with the team under the direction of the Senior Producer to reach program objectives.


Key Tasks:

  • Contributes ideas for program content; participates in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Develops and maintains contacts in a range of diverse communities around the region.
  • Assists in developing program content including writing, researching, field recording and/or editing. Prepares scripts and lines of questioning, briefs the host; ensures adherence to the style and format of the program.
  • Adheres to the Journalistic Standards and Practices of the CBC.
  • Assists Senior Producer with vetting of scripts and show material.
  • Takes Syndicated content and localizes the scripts, tape, and other material to make it more relevant for an Ottawa audience.
  • Edits audio gathered from a variety of sources and ensures that it is packaged in the tone and style of the program.
  • Writes and posts, as required, a variety of digital content related to the program.
  • Follow local, provincial, national & international news from a variety of sources.

As required, performs the following tasks:

  • Produces program elements.
  • Develops an ongoing knowledge of and relationship with members of the audience.
  • Gathers material including audio, video and photos to enhance digital, video platforms as required.
  • University degree or equivalent, with at least 4 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to write for radio.
  • A strong news sense with an awareness of contemporary political, economic, cultural and social issues of importance to this community.
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience and the ability to tell stories from those perspectives.
  • Demonstrated technical skills such as recording interviews in studio, and by virtual methods (Zoom, phone, Facetime, etc)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the CBC/Radio-Canada's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Nimbleness to respond to breaking news, and flexibility to pivot and re-arrange the show to respond to that news.
  • A valid driver's license is an asset.
  • Curiosity, imagination and flexibility.
  • Solid analytical skills.
  • An ability to generate original and innovative material.
  • An ability to work independently as well as with members of the radio production team.
  • An understanding of the needs of the Ottawa audience.
  • A robust contact list that includes diverse communities and individuals across Ottawa.
