About the Organization:

The Mennonite New Life Centre Toronto (MNLCT) is a vibrant, multi-cultural settlement agency for newcomers to Canada.

The Centre provides a variety of settlement services, including information/orientation, language instruction, mental health supports and capacity building workshops, public education and bridging to employment.

The Centre is a tech-forward charity that utilizes technology solutions to meet the needs of its stakeholders.

As a result, several of our services and programs are delivered in a hybrid format, offering clients and participants options to receive services through virtual and in-person services.

The Academic Assistant is responsible for supporting all Bridging Programs offered at MNLCT with the implementation, and day-to-day bridging program operations.

The Academic Assistant provides support to the instructors and the students and reports to the Academic Coordinator.

This role is ideal for someone who has strong project management and adult education experience within a human service or academic institution and is able to manage student records and progress.


Responsibilities:


  • Assists with scheduling activities, such as appointments, interviews, evaluations, classrooms, exams, meetings, and seminars.
  • Supports academic courses, including preparing seating charts and attendance rolls, tracking student attendance and participation, printing syllabi, organizing class materials, assisting with classroom technology, entering grades, and ordering classroom materials.
  • Assists with admissions processing, such as opening correspondence, sorting materials, setting up files, disseminating materials to program staff, and contacting newly admitted students.
  • Updates course catalogs, student handbooks, and bulletin boards.
  • Support the Academic Coordinator in supervising instruction of all programs on a daytoday basis
  • Provide support to instructors on technologyrelated issues
  • Support the activities of the program's academic committees and forums.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the team and provide weekly reports to the Academic Coordinator.
  • Data entry and maintenance of all program documentation related to student progress, course materials and policies.
  • Helps with event planning such as student orientations or award ceremonies.
  • Performs general office duties
  • Provide social media content and updates to Communications Team, as needed.
  • Minute taking and distribution at bridging and PAC meetings.

Qualifications:


  • Postsecondary education in Social Services, Administration, Adult Education, or a related field.
  • 13 years of experience providing administrative support in educational settings.
  • Experience working with a learning management system (D2L, Moodle, Canvas, etc.).
  • Knowledge of and experience with online/hybrid courses and programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, instructors, and administration.
  • Excellent interpersonal, as well as communication (written and oral), skills.
  • Passion for people, equality, and social justice.
  • Approaches all interactions with empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity, using an antioppression lens.
  • Must have experience working with newcomers and a diverse population.
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to work virtually and inperson at any of MNLCT's locations.
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency in all aspects of Microsoft Office, Client Management Systems, Adobe, and other similar productivity software.
