Position Overview:

Responsible for the efficient and effective performance of Vari-Form's in-house tool shop. This position reports to the Tooling Supervisor. Tool Makers are responsible for programming the CNC machines and ensuring that the machines are fully utilized and maintained. Tool Makers will provide continuous improvement to tooling that is frequently made. Position can and may require working on afternoon or midnight shift or being on call. Tool Maker performance will be based on profit generated from in house tool shop.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Program CNC machines and fabricate in house Vari-Form components and tooling.
  • Continuously improve Vari-Form tooling and consumable components to increase tooling life.
  • Ensure tool room is maintained and 5s systems are in place.
  • Review components for best case make versus buy scenarios to ensure the most profitable tooling is built.
  • Training of apprentice and or CNC operators.
  • Support emergency tooling breakdowns.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures supporting the quality management system, environmental management system, and health and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements and Skills:


  • Tool Maker trade designation ticket or equivalent experience in CNC and tool shop machining
  • 5+ years in automotive manufacturing working on tooling
  • Knowledge of heat treating and coating tooling and components.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office
  • Proficiency in MasterCAM latest revision software
