Caregiver Aid

Part time 25-34 hours per week. Variable work schedule includes weekends


Organizational MissionFauna Foundation is a sanctuary for chimpanzees, monkeys, and farm animals. Fauna Foundation is the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Canada. Fauna's mission includes sanctuary, education, and conservation. The sanctuary is located on about 200 acres about 20 minutes south of Montreal in Carignan.


Overview:
The Animal Care Aid position is responsible for providing support in care of chimpanzees. This is a part time position with a variable schedule that includes some weekends. There is potential to increase to full time.

The Aid will clean indoor and outdoor areas of chimpanzee residential building including chimpanzee living areas and human work areas; wash and dry laundry; cleans toys, dishes, and other objects; distribute enrichment; prepare meals and enrichment; and clean other work areas.

The Aid is responsible for assisting Chimpanzee Caregivers and Leads and other staff in ensuring the security of all resident living areas.

The Aid is expected to be able to identify all of the chimpanzees by sight, have a strong understanding of chimpanzee behavior, and utilize all radio calls.

Aids are expected to act as positive ambassadors for chimpanzees to the public, volunteers, interns, and other individuals at the sanctuary.

Aids must have high level of observational skills, judgment and intuition, a compassionate approach to serving others, be cheerful, optimistic, and a problem solver and demonstrate written and spoken English fluency.


Tasks:
The following is a list of the essential functions of this position.

This list is intended to be representative of the tasks performed with the position description but is not limited to it.


  • Cleaning nonhuman primate enclosures
  • Housekeeping in human work areas
  • Preparing meals and enrichment
  • Ability to work safely around nonhuman primates
  • Observational skills
  • Becoming part of the sanctuary team, willing to help other care staff and departments as needed.
  • Monitoring the safety of coworkers, residents, volunteer, interns and immediately alerting others to unsafe situations or condition.
  • Familiarity with Emergency Response codes and protocols
  • Participating in team meetings, staff meetings, staff training and educational sessions, and emergency response drills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.


Stand for long periods of time; walk, sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs, step stools, ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear.

The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds.


Environmental requirements:


  • Tasks are regularly performed with potential for exposure to adverse conditions such as toxic/ poisonous agents, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, animals/wildlife.
  • Employees must not object to chimpanzee behaviors such as spitting of water, saliva or food; throwing of food, or waste, and chimpanzee displays that may include banging, kicking of fencing, and/or loud screams.
  • Retaliation, and/or negativity towards or about the chimpanzees is/are not tolerated.
  • Experience working with nonhuman animals is preferred.

Must be Canadian citizen or have current Canadian work permit.

$18.00-$20.00 per hour
