Do you enjoy working in an office environment and have a passion for education and natural history? Bring your leadership, administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills to this position to assist our staff in providing engaging and educational experiences to our patrons Operating out of the Edmonton Valley Zoo, you will supervise staff and help implement interpretive programs, educational programs, and special events.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments to Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:

  • Perform administrative tasks related to interpretive programs in an organized fashion, including incident reports, timesheets, program reports, evaluations and statistics
  • Assist with daily public and group program needs
  • Assist with staff recruitment and supervision: interviewing, training, scheduling, coaching and evaluating throughout the season
  • Provide assistance and direction to staff, volunteers and visitors while acting as an onsite supervisor
  • Assist in the planning, delivery and evaluation of special events
  • Developing graphic content such as signage and promotional materials
  • Continually monitor and maintain the Volunteer Impact database: update personnel information, position descriptions, volunteer schedules, and track hours
  • Providing onsite Volunteer Coordinator support for Special Events
  • Order, purchase, maintain and deliver program supplies, artifacts and equipment which includes travel to and from businesses and between City facilities using your personal vehicle
  • Deliver staff and program support (as needed) and represent the Zoo Experiences team at meetings
  • Use RAMS booking software for program scheduling and the creation of program booking reports
  • Implement natural history interpretive programs and special event activities
  • Organize and implement various forms of interpretation such as media visits, website updates, onsite signage, and social media content
  • Step in to implement and deliver programs as needs arise
  • Provide support to other units, such as Customer Relationship Management, Animal Care, and Site Services
  • Conduct other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Completed first year of a recognized postsecondary degree or diploma; preference will be given to recreation, museum, science or educationbased programs
  • 1 year direct experience leading recreational, cultural or related educational programs; experience leading zoo programs is preferred
  • Previous supervisory experience with staff or volunteers is an asset
  • Strong organizational, time management and customer service skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of local and exotic fauna or animal biology is an asset
  • Strong work ethic, ability to work independently, complete tasks in a timely manner and work well under pressure
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace (such as Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets)
  • Comfortable handling and working around small animals, including amphibians and reptiles
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C is a requirement of this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance.
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Hours of Work: 33.75 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Some evening and weekend work is required
