The Opportunity
The Traffic Services Branch is a branch within the Development Services Department.

This branch is responsible for traffic administration, roadway illumination, roadway traffic signage, project signing, traffic control signals, pavement markings, traffic safety and guide rails and railway crossing maintenance.

This branch also administers the annual traffic calming program (i.e., speed cushions), and reviews the collision database for all reported collisions in Barrie.

In addition to traffic duties, this branch is also responsible for all Right-of-Way activities, including issuing municipal consents and Right-of-Way Activity permits, conducting Right-of-Way Activity inspections where required, and taking charge of the City's Graffiti Abatement Program.


The Corporation of the City of Barrie has a work experience placement opportunity for a student currently enrolled in an Advanced College Program to assist in the Traffic Services Branch of the Development and Traffic Services Department.

The Traffic Services Branch of the Development Services Department is responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic systems necessary to keep traffic moving effectively and safely within the City of Barrie.


The areas include maintenance and operation of traffic signal systems, traffic signage and operations, illumination systems, and right of way activities.

The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:

  • Administering Contracts
  • Traffic Signal Maintenance Contract, Central Traffic System, etc.
  • Traffic Signal System Monitoring
  • Operational Analysis of Intersections
  • Contractor Audits
  • Transportation Studies
  • Asset Management for Streetlight and Traffic System Elements
  • Public Surveys and Report Writing

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in or a student with a recognized College or University
  • Completed at least one (1) year of a related postsecondary education program at a recognized College or University
  • Enrolled in a recognized College or University Coop program, preferably enrolled in a Civil Engineering Technology Program or a closely related Civil program, and returning to fulltime studies

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Basic engineering, survey and drafting skills
  • Strong computer skills; including a good working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office and AutoCad
  • Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Willing to work outside
  • Wellorganized selfstarter with the ability to work well without close supervision

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Ontario Class "G" Drivers Licence in good standing, with reliable vehicle to use on corporate busines (travel reimbursement will be provided)
  • CSAapproved safety footwear in good condition

Hours:
The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement
