Responsibilities
- Manage and direct the commercial lines underwriting operations for British Columbia and Alberta in alignment with Optimum's vision and strategy
- Develop, communicate, implement, and monitor the region's annual commercial lines business plan. Lead the underwriting team in the successful execution of the regional business plan for profitability and growth while achieving service standards. Analyze inconsistencies and develop action plans as necessary
- Direct the regional process of monitoring and responding to the competitive market environment.
- Identify business challenges and opportunities and oversee communications and actions to resolve accordingly
- Actively oversee commercial relationship with all brokers
- Work closely with Optimum's corporate team to ensure products and services provided to our brokers are current and relevant
- Direct and assist staff in the underwriting of more complex risks
- Approve risks within authority levels as required to ensure that quality business is selected and written
- Ensure compliance with underwriting and corporate guidelines, standards, and procedures
- Develop, monitor, and track broker success ratios and identify and provide ongoing training using in person and virtual forums
- Monitors employee performance, training, and development needs. Work with employees to build career goals and ensure the progressive development of employees to achieve current and future regional objectives
- Work with a high degree of autonomy and maintain continual personal development in the areas of people management, leadership, and commercial lines technical ability
Experience
- Previous experience in a leadership role as a Commercial Lines Supervisor or Manager
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation or higher
- Postsecondary degree or equivalent combination of postsecondary education and experience
- 10 years commercial underwriting experience with exposure to business development, sales, and marketing

- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
- Strong computer skills
