    Role Responsibilities

    We are looking for motivated Legal Assistants to provide legal support to the lawyers on the Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team in Calgary. The Alberta Justice and Solicitor General Family and Surrogate Court Litigation Team (FASCL) deals with a very interesting, fast paced and challenging area of law. FASCL provides legal services to Children's Services, Child Support Services, the Maintenance Enforcement Program and the Office of the Public Guardian.

    The Legal Assistants within our division play and integral part in all of our teams. In all of our challenging legal assistant roles you will assist the legal team by:

  • Effectively manage and organize legal files and documents in preparation for court proceedings
  • Reception cover off (couriers, main switchboard)
  • Independently draft, prepare, process and file court documents such as, Affidavits, Orders, Factums and Books of Authorities, Briefs and Memorandums
  • Prepare and organize Trial Binders , diarize court appearances, photocopying
  • Sorting and logging electronic disclosure
  • Arrange appointments, return phone calls, fax responses, maintains legal files, manages lawyer's correspondence and assists and supports lawyers in all business activities
  • Use various programs such as Adobe Pro, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Utilize research tools such as Canli and Westlaw
  • Manage files by liaising with a variety of clients, counsel, self –represented litigants, witnesses, and the courts
  • Other administrative tasks as required by the lawyers such as drafting complex correspondence, making travel arrangements, and maintaining a diary system
  • Performs other administrative duties assigned by supervisor, solicitor or Director
  • Cover off for other assistants during vacation leaves/sick days
  • Assist office supervisor with on-boarding new students and hires.
  • This position will also act as the FASCL Calgary office Service Request Coordinator for all IT related matters and the successful candidate would require a strong base knowledge of how to trouble shoot a variety of computer related issues and will be putting requests through the GOA service desk. The candidate must have a strong understanding of remote access technology.

    To be successful in this position, you must be able to perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy and have excellent organizational skills to meet deadlines while handling a high volume of work. Your ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative while working in a team environment is necessary. As well, you must be able to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, witnesses, lawyers and support staff. Experience in Child Welfare, adobe programs, computer troubleshooting skills, knowledge of remote access technology and legal research are considered assets.
