    Job Description


    The Director of Software Development oversees a team of managers responsible for the business requirements, development cycle, and quality assurance of the WinAir aviation management system, a cloud based SaaS application.

    Collaborating closely with the managers and directional team, this role is vital to the system's ongoing growth and continuous improvement.

    The Director of Software Development reports directly to the board.

    Primary Responsibilities


    Lead the Software Development, Quality Assurance and Business Analysis managers to ensure the functional design meets the corporate strategy, priorities and vision.

    Manage multiple streams of work, overseeing the release schedules, budgets and resourcing to meet organizational objectives effectively.

    Maintain productive relationships with the board and directional team.

    Evaluate and improve software development processes using agile methodology.

    Oversee business cases and project proposals to ensure accuracy and execution.

    Anticipate bottlenecks and escalate as needed, following standard operating procedures.

    Create and execute strategic product roadmaps for mid and long-term planning.


    Assess the eligibility of SR&ED against development work and assist with the preparation of the technical component for the credit.

    Assist with the company's interest in Government Grants and funding, Innovation, IRAP, etc.

    Support the team with recruiting, onboarding and creating an engaging and positive work environment that fosters inspiration and innovation.


    Stay informed about current practices in managing dependencies and technical debt while developing and executing plans for efficient code maintenance.

    Qualifications

    Education & Training

    Master's Degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering is preferred.

    Experience

    At least 10 years of experience in software development, with a minimum of 5+ years in people management

    Skills and Aptitudes


    Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a cross-functional environment, communicate with all levels of the organization and deliver engaging presentations effectively.

    Proficient skills and experience in Atlassian products, including Jira and Confluence

    Experience in building customer-facing products at scale and managing a team of 20+ cross-functional members.

    Product roadmap experience to elicit mid- and long-term product plans.


    Experience with JavaScript, as well as Java 8/11 frameworks JSP, JSTL, Tomcat (webserver), Ajax, GWT (Google Web Toolkit), CSS, , Struts 2, Hibernate, XML, JDBC, MS SQL Server, Jasper, iReport, Bitbucket and GIT.

    Experience with tools that support automated testing (Java, Junit, Selenium, etc.) is an asset.

    Experience and understanding of user experience issues, Internet design principles, and accessibility issues and standards.

    Experience working in and problem-solving in SQL and SQL Server Management Studio

    Good understanding of the SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) is an asset.

    Familiarity with QA tools and techniques, bug tracking systems, test design and execution.

    A solid technical background demonstrated in past engineering leadership roles with a clear impact towards achieving business goals.

    Experience with roadmap and release planning.

    Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

    Not afraid to think outside the box and bring forward suggestions for advancement and improvement

    Experience preparing SR&ED tax claims

    Environment and Physical

    Candidate must reside in London, Ontario or surrounding area.

    Must be able to work remotely and on-site upon request.

    Work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

    Be able to sit for prolonged periods.
